My levels seem up today - fasting level 7.2 and 2 hours after breakfast 8.5 and havent had anything special :-( I guess readings bounce about a bit.

That is a small rise and nothing to be concerned about. You are new to this malarky and will find that your fasting levels will hopefully become lower as you get more accustomed to it.
If your waking level had been 6.5 then the same rise would have you at 7.8, a rise of 1.3

i am reassured. My partner says I must not eat All Bran /skimmed milk- is it a 'no no'??

My husband.. he is 82 and diagnosed T2 a few weeks ago. .. had bran flakes with skimmed milk for breakfast today and he was 8.5 after 2 hours yes moderately high but still just on the recommended levels post meals He does not count carbs he has just cut out sugar stuff and eats less starchy carb foods than he did before T2 His levels were only just over 7 when he was diagnosed so not really high

I couldn't eat cereal and any sort of milk without spiking. We are all different and should eat to our meters. Did you also have a drink? Tea and coffee can raise levels in some people. However, your breakfast rise was nothing to be concerned about. You started higher than desirable, so must expect to finish higher, but the actual rise was fine.

Just got my result over phone from my surgery for fasting test last week at 6.3 - is that diabetic or pre-diabetic?

Was it an HbA1c test? It does make a difference.

If it was just a fasting glucose test, testing your level at the time the test was taken, then it was 6.3mmol/l which is a tad high (only a tad) but these tests are wholly unreliable and not normally used for diagnosis. It should be under 6.

If it was an HbA1c test it equates to 7.9mmol/l which is just in the diabetic range. These are the normal diagnostic tests and is an average of your levels over the previous 2 to 3 months.

I asked my doctor about HbA1c test and he said he gave me one a few months back and it was normal. When I talked with him today on phone he retracted his earlier diagnosis of Diabetes and said I probably only pre-diabetic and just to be careful. His previous diagnosis was based on a 6-7 fasting a few months ago. He is a pathetic specimen of a GP and totally missed my wife's shingles symptoms the other month. I will however continue taking care on my diet and self test regularly.

Perhaps it would be best for you to ask your GP's receptionist for copies (print outs) of all your blood tests including the HbA1c from a while back. You are entitled to these. You can then keep these for reference and look up what they actually mean for yourself. "Normal" is subjective, and "probably pre-diabetic" isn't good enough.
