Bitter Melon/Kerala Fruit

For anyone who fancies giving it a try, I have been taking 2/3 slices of fresh Bitter Melon fruit twice a day for the last week, in that time my blood sugar readings have come down from mid 6's to between 4 & 5 with no change to my regular diet. The fruit tastes awful  but it's a small price to pay for improved blood sugar control, I didn't fancy trawling through endless shops and supermarkets trying to get hold of fresh Bitter Melon so I ordered it online from a company called Spices of India who promptly mailed it out to me.

Hi drippihippi

Yes Bitter Melon works a treat however if like me you really can't stomach the taste  then I buy it in capsule form either as bitter melon or as karela.

I know what you mean, it takes a bit of getting down!

A bit! The stuff is pure evil. I managed just 2 days of trying to consume it without a nice protective coating!

If you are interested in all of this then look at this thread where a load of us have posted our experiences http://www.diabetes.co.uk/diabetes-forum/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=27056

Noticed it was your first post so welcome to the forum by the way. I can see from your BG's, HbA1c and the fact that you're diet only that you've discovered low carbing or low GI? If not ask as a low carb diet will work even better than bitter melon or anything else.

The max dose for Bitter Melon is thought to be around 10g a day. I take Metformin as well and just supplement with around 3g Bitter melon a day in capsule form. The other one I also take which I find works even better is one called Gymnema. I take Metformin as its safe and protects the heart as well as knocking around 1 or 2 off fasting levels and is effective at spike control. If you low carb like me then I don't get any of the side effects some people report.
