Hi all,
I am just getting to grips with my new meter.....2 weeks in and testing 4 times daily! I am also testing my urine (thats how I learnt I had diabetes) I am now almost always negative on my diastix or just a trace, before I was always the maximum colour no mater what time I tested fasting or not. When I was first tested with a thumb prick at docs it was 19.7.. 20.3 and lastly 17.7 they did three. My Hba1c was 12.3, this was 26th June. I am testing now at home and my morning readings before breakfast are usually around the 10 mark, before lunch maybe 12.4 and the best reading of the day so far is before evening meal is 8.3, bedtime is usually between 10 and 12, I am totally low carbing, I started off having 120 carbs per day or less, now I try to have no more than 70 grammes that is, fruit seems to spike me terribly except for strawberries, but apples, pears, etc, I walk briskly for 30 mins twice maybe 3 times daily( the dog is having a ball) ..... sample daily menu is breakfast 1 slice of multigrain toast, boiled egg and a cup of tea, max 20 g carb... lunch 2 cripbreads with tuna salad, chicken or ham and half a yogurt and three strawberries 20 g.. evening meal can be any meat or fish grilled or baked with lots of veg and 2 very small new pots or spag bol with tiny amount of wholemeal spaghetti or chilli with a tablespoon of brown rice, or maybe if I haven't had an egg for breakfast a two egg cheese and mushroom omelette and salad or steak and salad with one tiny piece of garlic bread and sugar free jelly with a small amount of fresh fruit salad, what I am asking is am I doing ok, I know my readings are coming down, when I got an 8 I could have run into the garden whooping  this is after 6 weeks, and can anyone tell me what the readings would be if converted to Hba1c, should they come down quicker, and will having gallstones affect the way my food is digested and therefore affect my readings, I know so many questions, sorry for going on a bit, oh and one last question, why are my best readings always at the end of the day ie. before evening meal and before bed? Thanks for listening and any help would be appreciated. :?

Hiya,

can I ask - what meds are you on or is it all with diet so far. As you're aware your numbers are a bit heavy still but you're on the right track. Are those after meal readings all at +2hrs? If you have enough strips then some +1hr might help as well as some foods will hit you earlier than 2hrs.

I don't know about gallstones I'm afraid.

The food you're eating looks great and as you can see they are having an effect. Just keep tweaking and testing - perhaps use roasted veg instead of pasta, make sure any yoghurt is really low carb (greek yoghurt is usually best and Total is the lowest) - fruit is very individual and I can't manage strawberries very well but blackberries are fine (go figure)..

It does take time to get the numbers down - keep at it.

Hi swimmer2 I am on diet only and obviously want to get my levels down before my next appointment beg. of October to avoid medication if possible, I haven't much weight to lose maybe half a stone max, I test 2 hours after breakfast and I dont usually test until before evening meal because I nearly have same to eat daily and reading is usually 8 or therabouts and then two hours after and before bed. If I am testing high do i try and eat less.... say knock of the potatoes to see if I am any lower, is this how it works? Thanks Vicky
