Hi

I am a recently diagnosed diabetic type 2. I am a little unsure what my readings should be. Usually first thing in the morning it can be about 9 - 10. During the day it can vary between 4 - 6. Since diagnosis the highest reading I have had was 12 but that was immediately after eating a small ice cream. I would say that the average is about 5, I take readings at different times of the day. I feel that I have it under control but would appreciate any advice. I have never been lower than 4 and am on Metformin twice a day.

Thankyou
John

There's some good info on there, with links to the original papers.

Sounds like you numbers are mostly good but with some Dawn Phenomenon

Metformin tends not to drop your blood glucose below 4. Non diabetic Bg readings are about 5 at all times, with few fluctuations. that then is the target to aim for. Sounds like your morning ( fasting) BG is a little high.
Use your meter, testing 2 hours after eating to find which foods put you up and try to keep below 7. that's the level at which damage beins To the micro blood vessels, in eyes, kidneys and other places.
Doctors tend to be happy with any reading under about 10. That's to allow for non-compliant patients, but is really too high. Under 7 is attainable if you keep your carb intake down. look throught the threads at recipes.

Agreed with Hana and TW, those numbers look pretty much spot on, other than first thing.
I'm not type 2 myself but I know a few who seem able to lessen the dawn phenomenon by eating some protein before bed. Might be worth a try?

All the best,

fergus
