Hi Was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes put on metformin. Asked nurse for blood monitor etc and she stayed that as I was on metformin I didn't need one. I thought all diabetic have one?

Lol ok pardon my ignorance, can you give me more information.
The strips used in meters are very expensive and so you are unlikely to be issued with one unless you are likely to go hypo. You are unlikely to go hypo unless you are taking insulin or a pill more powerful than Metformin.

Most type 2's don't get them and so buy their own. Members of this site usually recommend owning a meter in order to manage the diet and exercise.

There is no doubt that the SD has the cheapest strips of all by far and is attractive for that reason. It is also a little inaccurate but when you see the price of strips for other meters the inaccuracy is less of a bother.

I've got the code free and am really happy with it, even more so when I saw how much the strips are for other machines! Hope this helps

Thanks Sue. I just want something cheap to keep a rough idea. Nurse said it not out of control at fasting glucose 8.3. I looked at the code free think I'll go down that route. Thanks guys x

I use a Codefree too and it's so easy to use , the strips are cheaper. It's available fom homehealth, you will also need some lancets for finger pricking

Ok thanks so much xxx Its a completely new world, quite overwhelming. Like I've just been told and left if you get my meaning.

That's exactly how most of type 2's are treated, I was completely lost but after finding this forum I have done really well and now have it under control without medication. I was only diagnosed last summer so still feel rather smug at my progress. You will be fine and will soon understand it all, there is always someone on here to answer questions and give help good luck

Aww thanks darling. I was put straight on tablets as I'm a part time wheelchair user ie for outside, with stick inside. But once my stomach settles from the meds I'll take up swimming, might not be able to do much as I'll have a float jacket but it will be better than nothing x

My surgery gladly gives me prescriptions for Gluco RX test strips and sharps bins here on the West Coast. I try not to go overboard with testing, maybe once when I get up in the morning, usually reads about 7 and 9. and once before dinner, I mean tea time. They gladly take my sharps bins for disposal, but they wont touch them until I show them it is properly sealed, good luck.

I've just bought a sharps bin from the chemist (was £1.53) and they will dispose of it once full as long as its sealed. Wanted to be on the safe side as have a little one and don't want any accidents. I put the bit that you twist off the lancet back on it once used as well.
Swimming is one of the best things you can do as the water provides a natural support. One of my aims is to get back swimming in time for my hols later in the year...think its great to have a goal.
