Blood Pressure

Hi All,

one of those NHS health buses came round to the office where I work a few weeks ago and I popped along at lunch for a Health Test.

All was well, BMI, BG, Cholestorol and then Blood Pressure 165 / 90. Couldn't quite believe it as I am well in shape and very active. The Nurse left it for 10 mins then did me again and it was 159/89. She said she would fax my results to my GP and come back in a couple of weeks when the bus next visited as it was probably just a blip.

Well, i've been back today and the reading was 169/100. The Nurse told me to get in touch with my GP. I am under massive stress at work and working long hours with a 2 hr each way drive thrown in. I'm working out quite hard late in the evening with my running. I had put headaches and feeling tired down to stress and these workouts. I've also been having ringing in my ears but didn't really think much of it. I noticed the ringing came on when a particularly nasty client phoned me today and went off 5 or 10mins after the conversation ended. I don't know whether these are because of my Blood pressure?

I have been on a mission to get 100% in shape and I am now healthier than i've ever been so this BP business has really pulled the rug from under my feet. I thought the extra excercise would help with the blood pressure. It will go down like a lead balloon if I have to go to the doctors as this will mean I will probably not get into work until 11.30 given my 2 hour commute, even if i have the 1st appointment.

Has anyone any experience or advice.

I'm no medical professional but i guess your stressful job must be adding to an elevated BP. I would get an appointment with your GP and see what they suggest. I'm T2 controlled by diet but take 5mg of Amlodipine and it helps to keep my BP in check.
 
I think you should get it checked out, like you I found out I had high BP purely by accident, it prompted my GP into giving me a full MOT and that led to my initial diagnosis of type2 and high chol, all caught in the early stages, before (hopefully) any lasting damage was done.
 
As the others have said.....get your BP looked at, sounds like you will need medication ? Unless of course you have 'White Coat syndrome.' Happened to me whenever I had BP checked by the Nurse or Doc......way too high. A 24hr monitor proved it was WCS but even so BP was elevated too much to ignore so medication was required. Now all perfect with usual BP of 110/70 most times. I also monitor the readings at home and pass them on to my GP, accepted without question.

You really do sound VERY stressed out Carl........not good. You must try and find ways to relax a bit and rein in the work, work, work comes first attitude. You also need to rein back the fitness regime until this is investigated and dealt with. Work and exercise will be no use to you if you end up in Hospital or worse because you ignored the warning signs. When my BP was excessively high I too got ringing in the ears.......a classic sign for me that BP was too high !

Please see your GP asap about this.

My visit to the GP this morning has nothing to lower my Blood Pressure, in fact at one point I felt it starting to boil!

Quite frankly I am still shocked my GP's attitude.

He said that 160/100 was quite high but not really that high. This morning I was at 148/85 which is in line where I have been for the past 15 months. He said this is still ok and no need to worry. When I argued to the contrary, he asked me what else I was doing about excercise / diet etc and looked at my records and declared that in his opinion I had become obsessed about my health and needed to relax as I was in fantastic shape even for a non diabetic of 20 years younger. He said that my quest for 120 in my blood pressure was rediculous and a that 140 was a more realistic target for me. He said that the trust could not afford to treat people like me with this rediculous attitude towards my physical well being and if I wanted medication to lower my Blood pressure he would let me buy it from the GP pharmacy but is damned expensive.

I feel like i've been slapped in the face and thinking of getting in touch with the PCT to lodge a formal complaint.

Its been tough getting to grips with diabetes but I think ive absolutly cracked it and don't want to end up poorly again so will keep up with my rediculous regime of healthy eating and excercise.

I totally disagree with your doctor and believe that lower is better with regards to bp. I like to keep my own around 120/70 when resting and would be concerned if it started to rise, as Ken suggests why not change your gp. i used to have similer job my bp used to blow the machine up too. I now take a tablet a day called Lisinopril 5mg prescribed by the DR. Like yourself i was unaware of it. This tablet has reduced my levels to normal.A bit of friendly advice see your GP and relax the gym until your bp sorted out. Hope this helps .Take it easy 8)

Thanks for the advise guys.

I've written a letter to the practice manger at the GP's stating my case as a diabetic with BP at 160/100 not being ideal.

My brother is a GP in another area and he says he would never let a DB patient go untreated above 135/85.

I'm wondering whether its a bit of the GP lottery and funding with stoke being skint and all that.

On the relaxing and stress business, its easier said than done isn't it. I am a manager with a large business in construction and responsible for many people and need to keep giving them lots of work to do as well as keeping the profits rolling for the share holders. Competition is fierce and the days are a constant battle to win work over competition. I feel the stress not only of my position but for all those people who I need to keep in employment, many of which I know and love as friends as well as coleagues.

Anyway, I'll let you know how i get on.

As far as I've read on various web sites, hypertension is 90% causes unknown! ie, genetic or just "one of those things". I've taken ramipril for 5 years now. In the end get it checked (especially with diabetes!!!)

Blood pressure is a silent killer - sorry - we can have a very healthy life go running eat good and still get high blood pressure. I used to up until last July drive hour and half to hour and three quarter to work and back that is stressful on its own lwt alone then do a days work and then had a lot of stress at work. I take blood pressure tablets 3 of them.

I got myself a blood pressure gadget (not the one on the wrist) one like what the doctors uses and it gives you the read out - so take your blood pressure and record it 4 times a day for a week and take it to the doctor and show him what it is. Some doctors just worry about the lower reading i,e 130 over 70 its the 70 that they worry about this as its the pressure of your blood being pumped into your heart the 130 is the pressure of your blood being pumped out of your heart. Some doctors are now showing more concern over the 130 as well. Your natural blood pressure should be between 110 to 130 and 60 to 80. Try and relax your obviously in a high pressured job and yes I know what you mean when you say about going docs and then the travel time etc I have been through that with the company I left and they were not nice about it so I used to take a days holiday if I had a docs appointment.
