Hello All! I am so happy to have found this forum. My father is 62 years old and has been diagnosed with Type-2 Diabetes for about 10 years or so now. He is a heavier man at about 255lb and is a stubborn irishman to say the least. In the last 5 years or so we have nicknamed him "the sugar bear" because not only has he been constantly consuming sugar, he does so at an alarming rate . It has gotten to the point that he has had to have shots administered to his eye balls to restore and strengthen his blood vessels to prevent him from serious vision impairment. I am scared to think what the rest of his blood vessles and capillaries look like. What would be SO helpful for myself and my family is an educated explanation towards what he is doing to himself and the medical risks he is taking on by doing so. Anytime we tell him to drop the donut or coca cola his immediate response is "well I know, but my blood sugar this morning was xx, which is very good". So he is under the false impression that so long as his blood sugar (which he takes medication for) is at a normal number, he is not doing anything wrong by eating sugar. He has tuned out doctors advice and he will bend the truth to doctors and nutritionist about what his diet consists of, amount of exercise, etc. If anybody could please share any helpful tactics, horror stories, or even simply an explanation as to what he is doing to himself by eating so much sugar each day to scare him straight, I will be beyond grateful. He is an avid fisherman/boater so losing that would kill him. Thank you to any and all that spend any time sharing their opinion and insight!
