Hi there,

I have been looking through the net for some whey protien to help with my sugar level (had a really bad night last night so am looking for some extra help)

I came across this :

http://www.simplysupplements.net/produc ... a93f211d56

Its tablets to help control the sugar level. Has anyone tried this before or do you think it's just a fad?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Does anyone take any other supplements to help with sugar regulation?

Thanks,
Robbie

Hi again Robbie,
This is not a supplement that is recommended for diabetics, nor do the makers claim that it will help a diabetic. Chromium is believed to play some part in increasing insulin production, although the research into this is very patchy and nothing has been conclusively proved. Your body only needs trace elements of chromium so if your normal diet includes some beef, liver, eggs, chicken, oysters, green peppers, apples, bananas or spinach, then you are getting all the chromium your body needs. If you buy the tablets then it is a 99.9% certainty that you will just be throwing your money away. In fact, as you body will simply excrete any chromium over and above what it needs, you will literally be flushing your money down the pan!

Whey protein on the other hand has been proved to be of help to diabetics, but only if used in the correct way and at the correct time. Whey digests very rapidly, allowing it's amino acids to get into the blood stream faster than other protein sources. This is beneficial in the post work-out "anabolic window" (0-45 minutes after training or competition) because the muscle tissue at that point is most receptive to insulin and nutrients in the blood. It is often used by athletes to fine-tune their metabolisms, but is not something that you should tinker with without expert advice.

I see that your profile says you are "diet controlled". Have you actually changed your diet in any way since diagnosis, or are you doing what probably most of us have done in the past and looking for a magic potion that will do it for you? Believe me - there is not such thing as a easy fix for diabetes. If controlling it was as simple as taking a vitamin supplement, why do you think all the drugs companies make billions out of diabetes medicines!!

Hi Dennis,

Thanks again for your replies. Okay the chronium, will knock that on the head thanks to your advice.

As for the whey protien I really was thinking of something to have as a snack and maybe that would help me to stabalise my level (no not looking for a magic potion - just help!!!!)

Since I stopped eating white breat, pasta and rice and swapped to brown bread, pasta and rice my lifestyle has dramatically improved. I went from having 4 hypos a week to maybe 1-2 hypos a month so helped a lot. But level has taken a dip at the moment, so am trying to find some things to snack on as I find drinking a lot easier than eating (long story).

But thanks for your advice,
Robbie

I use whey protein because I use the gym and in these cases advised to consume it within 20 mins of ending activity.

As for effect on my type 1 diabetes - I'd say none! Just helps to build musle!

I am currently trying out Alpha Lipoic Acid from the same website - may have a slight effect. Not convinced though.

Hi Paul,

Really you don't think it has any affect on your sugar level? Hmm not sure if i'll try it then as that would be the whole point of me trying it. If i could get hold of a small tub of it i would try it out but they all seem to come in huge tubs and are v expensive so i'll have to think about it.

Thanks,
Robbie
