There are people here who help with meters-I think either @Goonergal or @Rachox may be able to help.
The general advice is to test on waking (fasting overnight) before meals and 2 hrs after meals and look for an increase of less than 2- any more and the meal contained too many carbs.
If you start testing, you'll test often and strips are expensive. So what you want is a meter with the cheapest kind of strips, yet still reliable. Of course, I can't find @Rachox info on it for the life of me right now, but she'll be along shortly, I'm sure. As for when to test, if you want to know what's going on and whether a change in diet is working: Test before a meal and 2 hours after the first bite. You're aiming for a rise of no more than 2 mmol/l. Test your fasting blood glucose occasionally, as that's the last one to come down anyway, and checking every day is pretty much a waste of strips, so maybe do that one once a week or something, if it's something you want to know. Personally I'm back in the normal range and usually aim for between 4.0 and 5.9, but anything under 8,5 is pretty good. Above that, damage starts occurring, so you want to stay under that if you can. https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/blog-entry/the-nutritional-thingy.2330/ might help with that.
Good luck,
Jo
