Blood sugar levels.

Hopefully I’ll get to speak to a dietician soon and I’ll certainly raise the question when I speak to the nurse.

Thank you again.

As a new T1 you may or may not still be making some of your own insulin, which means it's hard to calculate insulin ratios etc. And insulin ratios vary dramatically - some people need 1 unit of insulin for 20g of carbs, others need 1 unit of insulin for 1g of carbs, so it's not like most medicines where you just take the recommended amount. They genuinely don't know how much you need yet, plus that amount will change. At the moment they are probably more concerned with stopping you from getting a hospitalising attack of diabetic ketoacidosis (caused by high blood sugars and not enough insulin in your system) or an acute hypo. The odd spike here and there while you learn your ratios doesn't mean much in the global scheme of long term T1.

And to put things in perspective - 51 years T1 here and I've never had a DKA, though I've had some mouthwateringly high blood sugars. Hypos though, I've had and continue to get loads of those, though modern technology means that I'm a lot more relaxed about them than I used to be.

Good luck, you'll get the hang of things.
