Blood/sugar levels

About 9 months ago i was diagnosed with diabetes with a level of 7.1 and went on the recommended food requirements to control this. I was given a testing kit by my gp and found that my sugar levels were in the 5's and low 6's.
Prior to the last 3 month blood test I ate what i wanted and had sugary foods before competing in sporting activity, lawn bowls 4 hour games.
My blood readings came back as 6.3 even though i ate food which should have put me way over the 7 limit. I am not taking medication.
I fully intend to keep to the healthier lifestyle as I feel better but is it possible that my diabeted reading of 9 months ago was a warning not a diagnosis?
I have visited a private specialist who after seeing the evidence collected by my gp told me i was not diabetic, my gp insists that I am? I will continue to live a healthier lifestyle and see. where my blood readings are when I have my next test which my gp said should now be in 6 months.
Confused? of course I am. :?

If the readings of 5 and 6 are fasting readings then they are higher than what would be considered normal.

Typical non-diabetic fasting readings would be between 3.5 - 4.5 mmol/l and two - hour post meal below 5.5 mmol/l on average depending on the meal, with an upper limit of around 7.8 mmol/l.

There are tests that can be carried out to determine your level of insulin resistance and reaction to glucose I would suggest if you are concerned you discuss this with your GP and outline your reasoning for wanting the tests.
