Morning All

I was on here last week and was asking advice regarding carbs and diabetes, im glad to say since cutting out on a lot of carbs my bloods have come down to a much more manageable level. One thing i have noticed is that i can go to bed with nornmal blood levels, say 7 yet wake up with bloods of 10? Am i sleep eating?! Lol does anyone else have issues like this?

Another thing is does anyone have any ideas or suggestions for low carb breakfasts? There are only so many things you can do with eggs!!

Thanks

Hi and welcome

What you're referring to is probably the Dawn Phenomenon or Liver Dump, there is info about this on the forums and you can find it by searching for one of those terms. Basically the liver responds to overnight fasting by dumping glucose to give us energy to start the day. It will come down over time as your overall blood sugars come down.

For breakfast I have full fat greek natural yoghurt with berries and a splash of sweetener. Or berries and clotted cream.

I know its eggs but...I make scotch eggs with out the breading, just cook them in the oven. What about a shake? Low sugar jelly and cream. Cold meats. Just because we in this country have cereals nothing wrong with a continental breakfast, nice gouda cheese and cold meats.

I have never heard of dawn phenomenon, i looked it up and looks like thats what it could be. I have my check up tomorrow so will definately be bringing this up, thanks!

They are all really good ideas, definately with the shakes and the cold meat and cheese! i have hunted high and low for low carb breakfast cereals but they are really hard to come across and also very expensive! Thanks for your help and ideas!

Avocado? (Don't say "no thanks I'm trying to give them up")
Great with lemon juice, easy to eat straight out of the shell or chopped with cream cheese, tomato, salami, whatever.

If you have a Lidl near to you, try one of their high protein rolls from the fresh bread baskets. A whole roll is only 8g carbs. I slice mine in half and can only manage one of the halves as they are very filling, and totally delicious toasted with loads of butter on, and ... yes..... an egg! (or grilled tomato) They look pretty grim on the shelf, but honestly, they are lovely and they freeze well. They do nothing to my BS levels.

I'm not sure that your doc or nurse will be able to contribute much about dawn phenomenon. it is rather a fact of life for us type 2s.

Many people find that it eventually responds to lowered/improved blood glucose levels. Sometimes after several months of good control. Others, like me, find that it is just... there. I can eat a snack on waking, which stops it rising during the morning, but other than that, the only thing that has made any impact at all was several months of no carbs and no protein at breakfast. I have basically been on bulletproof coffee or coffee and cream for breakfast since the Spring. And that has only had a very slight impact.

Not something I would recommend to anyone else, since I consider breakfast a very important meal.
