Can anyone tell me how I can get my blood sugar levels down. Normally on waking between 8 - 12, later in the day possibly higher. I follow the slimming world plan and go to the gym/swimming 3 times per week (about 1 hour per session). I was in hospital in October 2012 and even in hospital they could not get my levels down. They put me on insulin injections and told me to lose weight (has anyone tried to do that?) my weight has remained constant for 3 1/2 years (all the time I have been using insulin)
Really don't know what else to try. Looked at low carbs but don't really understand how this works.
Cutting down your carbs..well, you look at all the different type of carbohydrates that your daily diet may contain regardless of the source. That's anything containing/made of flour, grains, potatoes, pasta, rice, sugar, fruit etc. First you calculate how much carbs you eat in typical day...and then you decide how much less you are going to consume and what to cut out/change to get that total number down.
If you look at all the food labels, they state how much each different nutrients in there 'per 100g' or per 'unit'..you look at the 'total carbohydrates' figure. For example; your slice of toast maybe about 19g per slice...small apple about 12g...now if you would have both of those..that would total 31g.
I aim to keep my carbohydrates 20- 50g per day, that's quite low intake and you could start by lowering your intake gently from what is typical for you now and see what happens to those blood sugar readings and if you feel like reducing your carbs even more. To me 31g from just those 2 things would be a lot..would not leave much for rest of the day and those 2 would not keep hunger away for long. I would rather choose something much lower carb content and have my fill with them!
It is all down to little calculations and even that is not necessary...just look at the link bellow and choose low carb ingredients for your diet and choosing what is suitable for your taste buds and appetite...it is sorted!.. you are 'low carbing'. If you choose something with more carbohydrate content..then you do need to set firm limit for yourself and calculate.
Here is easy to understand website that will help you along and will lists 'good food' from 'carb foods'...
