Sick day rules from DAFNE. You may find these useful. Hope it’s copied ok. If not just Google it. It lays out procedures which are very useful. No matter what illness we have it is likely that we will need much more insulin than normal. As illness produces higher sugar levels.
When our bodies are stressed, our liver dumps extra glucose to give our bodies the energy to fight.
When we have diabetes, we do not automatically release the insulin to use this glucose, therefore we need to inject more. @becca59 's sick day rules are incredibly useful in this situation.
Remember
- if your level are persistently high you at risk of DKA so test your ketones as well as blood sugars
- if your levels are high, you become insulin resistant so need a higher correction than normal. When my levels are over 15, I need twice as much insulin (but we are all different so you may not need as much ... or more).
