Blood sugar raise after change of long lasting insuin

Morning folks.

I was diagnosed with type 1 in 2013 and have mostly had really good control. Before Christmas I noticed they were raising and have continued to do so into 2017. I had an appointment with my diabetes team a week ago who decided that they would change my long lasting insulin from Humalin i to Levemir (this was also due to noticing I could not seem to lose weight regardless of diet and exercise). However since being put on this my bloods are still through the roof. Did anyone else find that there was a settling period with new insulins? I'm wondering whether I need to split the dose as I'm getting up 2-3 times in the night and having corrective doses of my humalog. I really would appreciate any thoughts on this. Having high blood sugars does not sit comfortably at all! Many thanks :)

Thanks for that. I'm currently using 22 units. I wonder if I should be doing 2 lots of 11?? I was only on 15 of humalin i but obviously this had stopped working for me.

My nurse said it should last 20 hours? Is this not always the case? I'm so confused!!

I strongly recommend calling your nurse and asking for verification on this. I don't use Levemir myself but most people on this forum take it every 12 hours. Either your nurse mixed up her information, or she has other reasons for those instructions, so it's wise to get in touch before making changes.

She did suggest using it twice a day after a week if it wasn't doing what it should :) I'll see how it goes. It makes me nervous as I was on humalin i for so long and naturally was confident with it x

I moved from Lantus once a day to Levemir twice a day. It took quite a while to get the dosage right - I need a higher total dose of Levemir than before & was a bit worried about the quantity. However having sorted it out, I'm glad I made the change.
Yes there is definitely a settling in period with a new insulin.
