I do not have diabetes
Hello there!

Basically I'm an overweight guy (about 5.11 feet and am 17 stone 13 lb) and my mother and her mother both had type 2 diabetes.

Now I'm concerned I might be in pre diabetes because of that, my weight and a work that gives me very little exercise.

To remedy this I am dieting, beginning to exercise and making an appointment with my doctor, who I can't see for a week.

In the meantime I've been doing some blood sugar tests and wondered for your opinions,

In the mornings after not eating for approximately 8 hours I've had results such as 5.4, 5.6 and 5.7.
During period that I had been eating meals snacking within an hour I took readings such as 7.3, 7.5 and 7.8

Appreciate your opinions

Hi

Here is a link you might find useful

http://www.diabetes.co.uk/diabetes_care/blood-sugar-level-ranges.html

Although your readings appear to be in the healthy range, you would do well to stick with the diet and increased exercise regimes, as these, in addition to reducing the risk of diabetes, will have other health benefits such as reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and should of themselves contribute to a greater feeling of well being.

Once you are diagnosed with diabetes, there is no going back. You are stuck with it for life. Given your family history, you are therefore right to be proactive in taking measures now to reduce your risk of developing it - obesity is one of the factors leading to increased insulin resistance and ultimately diabetes.

So congratulations on making a start. always the hardest part of any journey!

Keep at it and stay well

Hi and welcome,

I see you are testing before meals and after 1 hour. If you test 2 hours after a meal, as well, you can then see if your levels are back within the normal range, as indicated in the link that Pavlosn sent.

Exercise and diet have been most important for me in reducing both weight and blood sugars. I walk a bit over an hour each day and have eliminated sugar and all grain based carbohydrates, such as bread, rice, pasta, biscuits etc. You will find many posts on here that are very helpful with diet.

I admire you for being so sensible as to make changes before it may happen. Good luck.

I have a friend who was very overweight and had type 2. She got a gastric band, lost many stones (think around 7 or more) and has now stopped her metfor min and her blood sugars have been normal for well over a year.

Good luck to you - it's worth losing the weight not only to hold back diabetes, but you will feel a million dollars, look great and probably live much longer - and with better health.
