my dad has had diabetes for a long time, and is on a lot of sugar control tablets. he's having a number of serious health problems now. the doctors say not to worry about blood sugar swings at his age, but does anyone know if extreme peaks and troughs are less important in the elderly, or are the doctors likelyi n effect saying it's not worth worrying about because he's not got long to go?

(second question not expecting clear answer to is could there be any link between diabetes/ sugar levels and anaemia and confusion and sleeping lots)?

Hi there
I am recently diagnoised type 2,
I don't know alot, But i find when my blood sugar is raised i sleep alot, i am 33 years old!
i doze alot, I find high blood sugar levels cause me confusion, i get some side effects!
I also find that after dozing that i do not feel rested!
Hopefully someone better will come along and offer info!
I can honestly say that i don't know alot!

If he's on metformin, that depletes B12 and low B12 may be a factor in anaemia, that would definitely be something worth checking out.

Mother has B12 deficiency for a different reason and became quite anaemic after we moved, until our new GP was reminded she needs regular (3 monthly) shots.

My sympathies, she's 93 and on a bunch of meds for various problems, however the GPs here are pretty proactive especially with things like thyroid they don't bother with elsewhere, probably because there's a large and still active population of octagenarians and more and they like to keep them that way rather than just writing them off (a neighbour is 103 and I think the oldest person in town is 108)
