i'm currently being tested every three months to check my levels. is this often enough or should it be done more often. ie. by myself at home?

If you have no meter I suggest you get one. Your doc has probably told you that it isn't necessary for T2's to test at home. In my opinion, this is absolute rubbish. If you are to have any chance of controlling your blood sugar you need to know which food spikes your blood and which doesn't. So, if it's bothering you that you don't know....get a meter. I live in NZ so probably can't be much use as far as buying your own meter goes, I am sure that someone else will be along to tell you this. Isn't it night time there? :D

For me, I think that a meter is the single most important thing you can do for yourself in controlling your condition. It was for me :)

Good Luck.

The three monthly blood tests give you an average of what has happened over that period, but they don't tell you how that average is made up - e.g. are your glucose levels fairly steady, or sometimes going too high or too low. So buying your own meter and doing regular testing will show you which foods can do nasties to your glucose levels, and this is definitely the best investment you can make diabetes wise.

If you're in the UK the SD Codefree is a good meter to buy as the test strips are very reasonably priced. You can buy the meters from eBay or (slightly dearer when I last looked) from Amazon UK. Test strips are about £6.99 from either site.

I bought my meter before I found this forum and heard about the Codefree, but even so I believe it's been worth every penny!
