Hello all,

I have a real problem going on at the moment. For a long time I've had my BGs under control, then last year I had a foot ulcer/severe osteomyelitis and was on antibiotics for almost a year. It eventually healed. Then this year I got another foot ulcer and it took another 6 months to heal, but since then my right foot has become very swollen and deformed. Then my right leg became very swollen to the point where it feels like it wants to split and burst. And now my left leg and foot are doing the same.

I can no longer get my shoes/boots on and live in slippers. I ordered some bigger boots but am very scared to walk in them in case I get another foot ulcer.

For the past 6 months I've been afraid to eat much as everything I eat hurts me and I now live on eggs and soup, which still hurts anyway.

But now, even with my medication, my BG is very hard to control and today when I woke up it was around 15 and I had eggs and medication for breakfast and now, 7 hours later, my BG is still around 10 and all I've had since the eggs is some chicken soup.

I saw my doctor last week about the swelling in my foot and leg and she said it's not swelling and could possibly be some vascular problem so starting tomorrow I'm having blood tests then next week I'm to go for a chest xray and a Doppler ultrasound.

Does any of this sound familiar to anyone else and how have you managed it? What could be happening to me because I'm really scared.

I'm thinking that the next time I go to my doctor I'll just tell her I'm fed up with diabetes now and could I have something else to try instead like, say, hayfever for instance.

I'm sorry to hear about your problems, it can't be easy :(

Can I ask a couple of questions please?

-Are you aware of your average BG, or even better have you had an HbA1c done?
-What medication have you been prescribed and did your doctor not mention the possibility of increasing it to bring your numbers down?

Diabetes may be the main contributing factor to the issues you are experiencing with your feet. It's possible that a reduction in BG levels will help to prevent the frequent ulcers that you seem to be getting.

I wish you a full recovery,
Grant

Thank you so much Grant.

My last HbA1c was 4.7 and the doctor said it was a bit low so reduced my Gliclazide to 2 per day, but I noticed the finger prick tests going back up so I went back on to 4 per day. I also take 4 Metformin per day.

Can both of those meds be increased? I thought I was already on max dose.

I'm having an HbA1c tomorrow and I feel sure it will be much higher than the last test.

The ulcers were caused by my feet swelling up and making my footwear too small so that they rubbed. But I'm so scared to wear my new boots in case they also rub. My first ulcer was caused by a corn. I had put a corn plaster on it not realising that diabetics shouldn't use them. I didn't realise there was an ulcer forming under the corn plaster.

Even the soles of my feet are swollen which makes it very hard to walk :(
