After speaking to my nurse at Doctors Surgery she said because I am type 1 diabetic when I go to hospital they will give me different meter.

What meter do you have ?

It sounds suspiciously like a back door attempt to switch you on to the newly approved cheaper meters and strips.

Apparently I'll get a upgrade for being type 1 diabetic this is my current one ImageUploadedByDCUK Forum1426274945.661835.jpg

Not exactly sure as I'm not on Insulin, however, my GP recently sent out some GlucoRX meters as the lancets and strips are more cost effective. The note with the meter advised that it had an average BG per day that was useful for DVLA purposes.

Didn't keep the letter unfortunately, the meter's pretty good, a little large and annoyigly the case it comes with doesn't have a waste pocket to put used lancets and strips in.

There was also some talk of one that counts carbs by what meals you have and it adjusts the doses for you she also mentioned they may offer me a insulin pump which ain't never gonna happen as I'm a bricklayer and it would get knocked about etc etc

Your current meter is one of the cheaper ones, so you may have hit the jackpot if you are upgraded ! :D

In my opinion as a Type 1, it's practically impossible to downgrade further than the Glucolab one

My advice would be not to dismiss the idea of a pump straight away no matter what you do for a living . They can make a huge difference :)
