I am type2 and have just started taking my blood test. Is it correct that my test during the night and before breakfast is higher than 2hrs after a meal. What should my readings be?

Hi Glenmar and welcome to the forum.

Your blood glucose level should always be higher berfore a meal (pre-prandial reading) than after a meal (post-prandial reading). Sugar levels generally peak 2 hours after eating, although this can vary depending on whether the carbohydrate you have consumed is rapid acting or slow acting.

In general terms your morning BG level should never be higher than it would be 2 hours after any meal, but many of us suffer from what is often called the dawn effect or dawn phenomenen. Have a look at this link as it explains this much better than I ever could!

Dennis shouldn't that be lower?

Sorry - that's what you get for hitting send without previewing.

Lets start again

Your pre-meal blood sugars should always be LOWER than they are after any meal.

Sarah & Sue thanks for spotting the mistake, and Glenmar sorry if I confused you!

Hi there,

Having been a type 2 for about 10 years now, and most of that time spent in denial, the recommended morning reading should be between 4 and 6 mmol/l, I am happy if the figure is less than 7.

I have found this website quite an inspiration and have changed my lifestyle as a result, you are responsible for what you put into your body after all!

Thanks everyone for your help.
Willemine how have you got to under 7 I seem to be stuck at about 9 or 10 on tablets but don't understand dieting properly. Hoping to get some advice from my nurse on Thursday.

Cut out chocolat completely, sensible breakfast in the morning, porridge at present laced with cinnamon, fruit mid morning snack, two slice of bread at lunch and sensible dinner (No junk food!). Still feeling hungry at times so supplement with more fruit in the evening!
