Bloods reading of 27.1 help

This morning I have had an epidural in my spine to try to help with the pain in my legs and back which I have had now for 2 years.
Before I had this procedure they took my bloods and the reading was 19.00 and 18.00 after..this was quite a shock for me as the readings have been a steady 7 to 10 . This has been on my mind all day as to why? I have now taken my own and its 27.1 which is frightening me...I have just rang 111 service for advice someones ringing within 2 hours...does anyone know what I should do..

I have had type 2 for 2 years this is first time anything like this has happened
 
@ROYALMALE You did the right thing phoning for advice.

In the meantime, drink plenty of water so you don't get hydrated. Are you on any meds for your diabetes?

Why you're high - I don't know, but it could be pain or stress or possibly an illness.

You did the right thing ringing 111, providing someone actually does ring you back quickly.

I imagine the injection was a cortisone steroid. (I've had them in the past for a slipped disc and sciatica) Steroids do raise blood sugar levels and this will have been a strong dose, so that may be why your reading back at home was high. Your readings before the procedure could have been down to stress.
 
yes cortisone 3rd one I've had this ones the worst for pain

Ok - make sure you tell the 111 doctor that, and give as much detail as you can about your blood sugar readings.

i only know about pregnancy epidurals so I can't be much help there, but, as @Bluetit1802 said, if you had steroids, they often cause high sugars. However, I'd have thought you'd have been told that if that was the case. It is possible that pain and stress alone have caused this sudden rise.

My second one was dreadful. I refused the third one and opted for surgery instead. I hope it works better for you than it did for me. The pain will not have helped your BS levels any more than the strong steroid..

Have you tested yourself again? Has anyone rung yet? Keep on at them if they don't, or go to A&E or an emergency walk in place.
 
Thank you for your advice...just tested again its now 23.8..still high...2 hours is up at 7pm and will go to a&e if not
 
well they did ring back and said that to keep drinking fluids and that also it could well be the injection and stress on the body and that I should take another reading in 4 hours which I have and its slowly gone down to 17.3...so hopefully it will start to drop a bit more tomorrow will let you know

Glad it is going down.

Keep monitoring it, and I would make sure that you ask for this to be mentioned on your clinic and surgery notes. They may bear it in mind when considering future treatment.

Let us know how it goes today? Hopefully it will continue to drop.

thought I would update you with yesterdays readings they were 17/16/21.9 when I phoned 111 and Nottingham NEMES again and they said because your on tablets there is not much we can do to bring your bloods down and it may be that your meds need looking at again as your body maybe resistant to what your taking...see your GP basically tomorrow, later on in the evening my readings were 27.8/22.8. well got a phone appointment this morning and a nurse practitioner phoned me back going in at 1pm so will let you know what they say. My bloods this morning were 14.7 before breakfast and 19.7 2 hours later
