I am a 67 yr old male in the usa, w/h worker, cdl driver and have a small business on the side. Have had increasing sugar issues during the last year and when my AC1 came in over 9 my doctor started me on metformin. When he increased the dose my sleep became so interrupted I fell back to using the original dose.......he also added another drug.

When I couldn't pass my DOT physical they gave me a temporary for 3 months. I went on a months vacation shortly b4 the deadline and was determined to get a handle on my sugars. By now the doc had put me on inject-able insulin. I was using Lantus at night and Hemalog during the days b4 meals. I started at 10u each night and 2,4,6 or 8u b4 meals on my BG readings b4 I ate. When my sugars were not what they should be i was instructed to use more insulin. One day my boss called and says I can't drive using inject-able insulin, no exceptions. By now i was using 48u each evening and averaging 12-22u per meal. Started to seem crazing to me after only 3 weeks of using insulin. I took my last dose that evening and haven't used for about 1 month now. Of course, my sugar levels have increased to the 180-250 range even after fasting unless i have been very active that day.

When I quit using the insulin I started on a strict diet using a intermitent fasting schedule to remind me not to eat after dinner or until about noon the next day. The results were amazing. In 20 days my weight dropped from 245 to 225 b4 to level off at 228......biggest change is I feel great and have a lot more energy. Problem is my sugar levels are still too high even after a 16 hour fast! I feel they will slowly move lower after my dieting has more effect on my health and weight.

I would like to share my experience with all those who feel the medical field is merely chasing the symptom of high BG levels instead of looking at the cause, poor nutrition and eating habits. Many type 2's are struggling with overweight or obese bodies. Type one people with pancreas probs are different, i'm sure.

I have other health issues and will start to search this site for similar issues with other type 2's. So maybe I can offer some helpful info while looking for the same for me. Thanks to all who can find the time and are willing to share. bobbym47
