bolus question

Hi,

I my post will bump your question back up to the top of the Recent Posts lists, where hopefully an experienced insulin user will see it and answer.

Bearing in mind that I am not an insulin user, so cannot advise you based on personal experience, I suspect that if you have one meal without carbs, and without insulin, but monitor your blood glucose very carefully afterwards, you will build up a picture of what happens, and can use a correction dose if necessary.

Hi @karen8967 . Protein for me is a strange one. I do a lot of physical exercise and this can determine how much protein my body uses. Excess protein in the system gets used as a source of energy and can cause blood sugars to rise.
Generally if I eat 30 g of protein I will cover it with 1 unit of bolus.
Your gammon and egg is a high protein meal. Unless you have recently undertaken physical activity it is highly unlikely your muscles will take up and use this protein. It may be wise to consider a smaller than normal ratio dose BUT keep an eye on your sugars.
Strangely if you was to have a round of bread with your dinner then you would probably find that you would only need to bolus for the carbs in the bread and not have to consider the protein.
We are all different so it's hard to give specific information.
Gluconeogenesis is worth a google search.

Hi @therower i never took my insulin and now 1and a hours later my bgs are going lowish b4 food levels were10.3 now levels are 5.9 an im just about to have a little snack im more active of a morning and early afternoon as my job is very physical thanks for your advice

Seems like it's the opposite for me Karen. In the evenings though, seems protein will cause a rise for me. The mornings I think it stays stable enough

I do not bolus for meals (almost) without carbs and that seems to work for me. I do eat carbs regularly, so that might be different from someone who eats very low carb as a rule.

I guess you found your answer then! And a wonderful way to lower your blood sugar in the hours after eating as well!

Hi joe it seems having protien doesnt effect my levels albiet its the fist time ive done it i usually eat carbs at every meal i have a lot of trouble in the morning i spike no matter what i eat even splitting my bolus ive tried giving it 20/30 minutes b4 eating just as im about to eat even after i eat but still spike to around 18 although by dinner time im bk in range

I eat vlc and bolus for half my protein. So 30g of protein I would bolus as if it were 15 carbs, just like @the thrower.
In the absense of carbs we will gluconeogenisis. It could be different if an isolated no carb meal but mine are always ultra low and protein will raise me just like carbs. I’d continue to check at 2,3and 4 hours.

Have you tried no carbs in the morning? I spike as soon as I get out of bed, so I take a bolus before I do, regardless of breakfast. For me, the 'feet on the floor-bolus' is about as much insulin as I would take for a small slice of bread. A bit less when I wake on the low side, A bit more when I wake on the high side. When I eat breakfast with carbs, I just bolus again for that. Might be someting for you, but be very careful and don't spare your teststrips! Mind, this is not medical advice, only my own experience, and you should speak of this to your DN before trying when you're not confident adjusting your insulin doses. The only way I was able to learn those kind of tricks was by using 10 to 16 test strips a day, every day. Now I'm spoiled and use a libre. Good luck and take care!
