Hi. I can't see why there is an increased risk of infection if, and only if, your husbands blood sugar is controlled to near normal. Also there is the possible problem of blood circulation in the foot. If there has been long-term capillary damage then blood flow may be reduced but this can be checked by foot pulse and nerve sensitivity tests etc. I had a bunion op a few years ago without any problems but the hospital checked my foot pulse, and BS before the op and every hour during the night (!) afterwards.
