Diabetic books are a mixed bag and only a few could be said to be worth buying let alone reading and taking advice from. This is especially true of recipe books. I am still unsure about this book. It appeals to me on some levels but its tone may jar with others in a UK audience. That said no one will come away from this book without picking up a few tips and some of his enthusiasm. Of course, being an American book you can expect to have to convert units e.g. for HbA1c or measures for recipes.
There's plenty to read of course even though some ground has had to be covered to ‘set the scene’. But that did not put me off plowing through the introduction and getting to the gist of the matter. That does tend to be the way with these help books but by all means skip here and there because the book lends itself to that. I suspect also that newcomers might be a little put off by the zeal and rules he lays down to follow.
DM is a serious subject and if you want to moderate and control your condition some fairly drastic measures are suggested. It is here that the book is very refreshing. One might also use that oft over-used term ‘revolutionary’. In some key aspects it goes against the conventional approach not the least being the medical world's insistence on use of pharmaceuticals to control blood sugar levels. This has always been the subject of much discussion and he sets it out well for you to understand and be won over to the rightness of his course of action. Disagree or not, he offers much supportive evidence to back this up. So I found his arguments convincing and newcomers would likely too I feel.
The other key area is diet. In fact this is one of the lynchpins of his argument. Poor diet is, many assert, the cause of DM but a good diet could be our salvation. That said the demands on industry and individuals are far reaching and by no means likely to happen overnight.
Also covered is the need for fairly major changes to our lifestyles and other habits especially with exercise. I wholeheartedly agree with these actions but feel that for some the effort required may be too much.
DM is a life changer. Not always for the good but within this approach perhaps lies an opportunity for anyone of any age to realign their life with a better course for a longer healthier life perhaps not just if you have DM.
Someone once said there are two kinds of people around. Those who have DM and those who are going to get it. We all need books like this one. It should be recommended reading for ordinary folk and the ‘movers and shakers’ alike because to get the disease under better control it needs action from the very top too.
