I have been very borderline Type 2 for about three years now..6.7/6.8.. this months blood tests showed 6.9 but I was still keeping it at bay
I am a 74 year old woman and was found to have high blood pressure 8 years ago this led to a blood test which also showed I had raised cholesterol and my doctor sent me to the hospital then for the glucose intolerance blood test which showed I did have an intolerance.
About three years ago the doctor put me on statins..Simvastatin.. as my cholesterol was over 5. Of course I had heard the stories from some people about the really bad side effect they had with them but that did not put me off taking them myself and I never had any side effects at all. The Heart Foundation really think they are good and recommend that people at risk of heart attacks and strokes should take them and of course this includes diabetics, high blood pressure and raised cholesterol so good enough reason for me to take them.
Having raised cholesterol ...which my doctor said is probably hereditary with me.. I have stuck to a fairly low fat diet with very little red meat ... eating mostly chicken and fish...I have low fat spreads, cheese and yogurts plenty of all kinds of vegetables which I love and fruit and I have not got much of a sweet tooth. I make my own soups and if we have pizza or burgers I make them myself that way I know whats in them in the way of fat and salt.
I have always had a reasonably healthy diet as I do not come from the generation of fast food and ready meals so never really got the taste for those and I have never been overweight I am just under 9 stone Since I have been borderline I have not really changed anything in my diet I have never eaten much white carbs as I am not to keen on pasta or rice and not a big bread eater either. I eat mainly wholemeal bread but sometimes white, I do make bread myself so some is white and like to make speciality breads with stuff in it like sundried tomatoes olives and herbs and a favorite is beetroot bread but I don't eat lots of any of these
Exercise for me is walking the dog every day and I feel really well. I saw the diabetic nurse this week and she said to keep on doing what I am doing as it is working for me and hopefully keeping the Type 2 at bay so far but if it does develop it will not be a total shock

Good luck Maybird. Do you have a meter than you can test your blood before meals and 2 hours after? It does give you a really good idea about what certain foods are doing. Do remember that low fat processed food like yogurt has its fat replaced with sugar, Greek yogurt is a better idea.
I was diagnosed with diabetes when my HbA1c was 7.1.

No I don't have a meter did think about getting one but thought it may make me paranoid about what I am eating.
Most yogurt that you see is greek style so I imagine not quite the same. The only real greek yougurt I have seen is Total this is lovely but much more expensive than other yogurts I usually have a plain live yogurt and make my own fruit puree sweetened with stevia to put with it
