Bowel 'op' BG levels gone wild!

Pain that would probably put your BG up. The operation and the fasting before it may be affecting the absorption rate when you do eat. Also if your medication includes steroids, they normally raise your BG. Haven't taken them myself, but I think when oral steroids are taken in the morning it's usual for BG to rise considerably in the late afternoon.

Sorry I don't have any real answers, hopefully someone who's been in a similar situation will be along shortly.

Its probably all due to the after effects of the operation, your body needs to settld down again, bg levels do go wild whenever we have stress, illness, ops, etc

You need to be patient with yourself and hopefully you have others around you to give you a bit of tlc and pampering, and cook you fresh, healthy meals, even if you cannot eat much, perhaps just a bit of good nourishing soup?

Dont hesitate to call your doctors/DN if you have any concerns, this is a time to get things off your chest as we all know that worries affect our health and bg levels on top of it all. This is a time for you when you need reassurance.

I would start taking your levimer again, as this is a background insulin which is helping out your pancreas and really shouldn't be stopped because your not eating... I know that you are T2 so your pancreas with be producing enough insulin to prevent you going into DKA but you still need it to maintain a resonable fasting BG..

As because of your operation it's likely that your BG is raised as the body heals itself, and the flucating will be based around the pancreas catching up every now again, so by starting the levimer again this should help stablise your bg.. Just keep an eye on things with extra BG's as it maybe that you might have to lower the dose slightly..

Not unusual at all for you BG to be all over the place after surgery, your body will be in a state of shock , you know what was going on but it didn't :crazy: ....Elective surgery is a real shock to your body, your hormones will be in fight or flight mode trying to heal you as quickly as possible. Cortisol is released in big amounts to aid inflammation and healing at the wound site this alone will increase blood sugars...also some medications will raise blood sugar.
Try not to worry too much it will settle in a few days, but I think Jopar is right maybe get your Basal back on board as soon as you can..this will help and if you have raises after the bit of food you can manage then I would not worry too much. If you get really high blood sugars when you are back on your full insulin regime then watch out for any wound infections..this is the first intimation with me that there might be a small infection starting if my BG goes up when things have settled.

Anna, sorry to hear of your troubles, sometimes diabetes has to take a back seat while you deal with other stuff.

get well soon ,and concentrate like you say ,on getting well. Your insulin regime will all fall into place as you get stronger and back to eating properly Now there's something to look forward to...I always start fancying when I can't have!

Hi Anna, glad you're feeling a bit brighter today. As Fallenstar said your HbA1c was just what you needed, heading in the right direction at last, long may it continue! Hopefully your appointment will be soon and you carry on improving.
