Breakfast Spikes

1 hour after having 36g carbs in the form if Bran Flakes, I have spikes up to 15mmol. 1 hour after this I go down to 5mmol or sometimes lower.

When I wake up I am around 6.3mmol and take 2 units for the bran flakes.

Any advice to stop the spikes after an hour and the lows an hour after that?

Thanks for your help! So much to learn! 5 weeks after diagnosis!!

Try injecting ahead of your food to give your insulin time to work, many of us find that by injecting 10-20 before helps reduce postprandial spikes.

There's a good explanation in the following called Strike the Spike by Gary Scheiner:

To stop the hypo's you need to look to see if your basal dose is correct before adjusting your meal-time insulin, if you miss your breakfast (and insulin of course) and still go low then you need to reduce your basal dose, if your bg levels remain stable then it's your insulin-to-carb ratio that needs to be changed.

Just be mindful of the food you are eating when you do inject ahead of your food, meals that have a high-fat content tends to take longer to digest and you may get caught out, when a meal has a high-fat content I inject just before eating.

I used to experience this too when I had porridge for brekkie. There are three solutions:

  1. Move your meal injection forward by up to 30 mins depending on the spike. You need to match the insulin spike to the carb spike. My guess is that you will need to shift your injection forward by around 15 mins. You'll need to experiment to find out.
  2. Switch to something with lower GI. High GI foods like cereals will spike you, whereas lower GI carbs like wholemeal bread will cause a smaller spike.
  3. Consume smaller amounts of carbs. I have natural yogurt with berries for breakfast. If you don't have many carbs, you can't have a spike.
