Can you please tell me what cereals are safe to eat. Also would it be better to eat porridge made with skimmed mild

As a rule of thumb the answer is none, as they are all high in carbs and sugars.

You can only find out which, if any you can tolerate by testing your BG response.

I tried stone ground large porridge flakes with milk a few weeks after diagnosis and it spiked my BG and it stayed there for over 3 hours, so for me Porridge is a no no, but for someone else the response may be different.

Personally I can't manage any cereals at all. Since getting my blood sugars under control I have had the occasional bowl of porridge (made with a mix of cream and water), but I only have one bowl around every 3 months or so.

I tend to have either:-
natural Greek yogurt with a few berries or
bubble and squeak fried in lard, from any leftover veggies (no potatoes) or
a toasted LIDL high protein roll, dripping with butter, or
fried good quality sausages (because they tend to be lower carb) and bacon. I wish I liked eggs but sadly I don't.

Hello. I love your questions popping up all over! Keeps me alert.
Breakfast depends on your circumstances. Are you in a hurry or do you have some time? Cereals are so convenient -- a splash (milk) and a dash, really. Needs planning to replace the bowl of sugary stuff.

Thanks everyone I'm really learning so much and I can now see where I'm going wrong.

Half a lidl high protein roll with lots of cheese toasted keeps me full and doesn't spike my BGS

All bran and skim milk. All bran is 45% by weight carbs so easy to measure, and great for the bowels

What does your meter say? It's going to be different for all of us. I've heard some people mention that 3 weetabix are fine whereas most diabetics would shudder at the thought. You really have to use your meter.

I cant have cereal but have a pot of porridge every morning with no spike. (I am lazy & buy porridge pots that you just add water), have figured the insulin ratio & I dont spike, I actually dip a bit after but nothing too drastic.

I weight out 30grams of aldi's everyday porridge which has 20g carbs made with water & 3 sweeteners, I'll add other things on occasion like 3 or 4 slices of banana or some yogurt, blood stays below 8.5 after 1hour & below start level at 2 hours most times, it's more about quantity to keep the carb level low.

Hi I have hot oat cereal with oatbran and milled flaxseed with milk and water each morning before going to work or I can also manage a small bowl of Bran Flakes which I add nuts and fresh blueberries to with whole milk. I have tested these b/fasts and neither of them spike my BS however, as said before, we are all individuals and food affects us all differently. The only way to be sure is to test

I avoid cereals completely and usually have 3 scrambled eggs, some high fat greek yoghurt and few nuts or blueberries.

I can verify the concept of testing as today I went a bit daft and had a pretty good fry up brekkie that would have flattered any transport cafe full of truckers.I have been good for eight days!!!
It was great but included black pudding (4.8g carbs) sliced fried haggis (8.8g carbs!!) and stupidly a slice of toasted white bread (20.8g carbs words fail me here). The rest inc coffee and cream was only 7.5g carbs.
FBG 6.4 and I was stuck in traffic so could not test till 2 hrs later 9.5.Back to down to 6.0 three hours later.
This is the first time since getting a meter on 1st August that I have had a spike like this and I did not like it one bit.

A good lesson that a bit of what you fancy is not always good for you.

Incidentally Aldi are doing Lincolnshire sausages less than 0.5g carbs per sausage.Pretty tasty too.Shoulda stuck with them.

Is it ok to have raw (uncooked) porridge oats in some yoghurt or crème fraiche with some berries for breakfast?

Try it and test! It's clear from these varied postings that we're different.

Hey chaps, It would be good for me if you could give a little more general guidance help rather than the "you need to test" replies as some of us only have the little wee sticks for testing and they are not much help . I have been having Weetabix mornings (throughout summer) and porridge (winter) and I am always within the guidelines for my bi-annual blood checkups. Last week I was given some "Rude Health Muesli No Flamin' Raisins" as a gift to try. It is pretty bland ( but so is Weetabix and plain porridge) but made a nice change and seems to be slightly better sugar wise as I don't seem to have to Wee so much (good sign) so I'm currently looking to see if there are any other Muesli that are cheaper. At a guess its the lack of Sultanas and Raisins that keep the sugar content down in this Muesli

Hey MrSteveVee, glad you're staying within your guidelines. Not sure how we can help. Why do you want to test yourself if you're happy with your surgery check-ups? You joined us in 2011 so you've surely read all you need to know. Is there another problem?

Hi Deejar, sorry mate caught me at the low ebb of a mood swing, Apologies if I was a bit harsh, I've eaten now so I'm fine . Yes the Doctors are happy but I know the wee sticks are often positive but oh so inaccurate so one tends to wonder what damage is happening during the positive times. I often peruse these forums to try and get better ideas for Breakfast and Lunch as I cannot eat anything even remotely spicy or peppery either due to belly probs (sigh!) . Unfortunately most discussions always revolve around the "you need to test" and as I cannot do this accurately due to our nice NHS and enforced redundancy stopping me buying them it sometimes rubs just a little too hard! Never mind, thanks for the reply, speak later. Steve V

Ah, ok, yes we T2s usually have to fork out for a meter and strips, if that's what you mean by sticks (as distinct from ketosticks). You weren't sounding harsh or anything, but I wonder why you're not giving lower carbs a try after all this time. And if you think there's no need because your bi-annual checkups are good, why bother with self-testing at all if you feel well?
