SELFISHNESS AND GREEDY PEOPLE :)
Hello, I have had type 1 diabetes for 64 years next march. I am 67. No, I don't want a medal! :) My diabetes has always been very well controlled and I don't have any diabetic complications :) Although, I was diagnosed with MS 30years ago. I also have an underactive thyroid! Very common with diabetes I believe. Now, for the second time since march, I have breast cancer! The first time on the left, it was DCIS. Successfully treated with surgery and RT. Now on the right it is invasive cancer! How lucky am I? I will know this afternoon how it will be treated. I have the last experience to go off, and i did very well, but I am worried in case this time involves chemo. How will it affect my diabetes, will I have to stay in hospital? Last time was wonderful because it was day surgery. Any advice?

Hi and welcome to the forum, although it is sad to be in such circumstances. Poor you, you have really had a tough time.

I am a type 2 and not on insulin, and when I had my breast cancer I wasn't diabetic. However, I do know that chemo involves taking steroids, which do not help with sugar levels. I blame my chemo treatment and the diet I followed whilst on chemo for giving me diabetes. I'm sure if you need chemo you will receive plenty of help and support with your insulin.

My tumour was an invasive ductal, grade 3, HER2 positive. I had a lumpectomy within 2 weeks of diagnosis, followed by 6 sessions of chemo then 3 weeks of radiotherapy. I also had to have Herceptin infusions once every 3 weeks for 12 months due to the HER2 positive element. I am due my second yearly mammogram later this month. So far so good, and all clear up to now.

Good luck with everything, and my very best wishes. If you want to discuss anything, please feel free to send me a private message.

HI, THANKS FOR SUCH A FAST RESPONSE! I EXPERIENCED THE AFFECTS OF STEROIDS WITH TREATMENT FOR AN MS RELAPSE, SO I KNOW HOW DIFFICULT THAT IS TO MANAGE WITH INSULIN. I SUPPOSE I WILL JUST HAVE TO WAIT 'TILL THIS AFTERNOON TO GET THE LOW DOWN ON THE TREATMENT. JUST HOPE IT WILL BE THE LUMPECTOMY AND RT :) I HAVE HAD MY DIABETES SINCE I WAS 4Y, SO I AM A BIT OF A 'TUFF' COOKIE, AND ALWAYS VERY POSITIVE, BUT.......HEY, ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! :)

One little tip for this afternoon if it isn't too late. Do ask for a copy of the lab report on your biopsy (I assume you had one). From wide experience, these breast care medics filter out any info they don't think you need to know, even if it is good news. I was never told my biopsy showed no vascular invasion, which is excellent news. I only found out from my biopsy lab report.

I AM BEING VERY SELFISH! HOW ARE YOU NOW? THE CURRENT CANCER IS GRADE TWO, SO I AM HOPING FOR NOT SO MUCH MEDICATION. YOU REALLY HAVE HAD THE FULL CHEMIST SHOP! ONWARDS AND UPWARDS, AND THANKS FOR THAT INFORMATION. I ALWAYS ASK QUESTIONS BUT THEY ARE NOT ALWAYS THE ONES YOU NEED TO KNOW.

I am very well, thanks for asking. I sailed through all my treatment with hardly any problems other than one episode of neutropenia, which involved a short stay in hospital. I was lucky to avoid most of the normal side effects, both of chemo and radiotherapy. I did lose my hair, but it grew back quickly afterwards and I am well past the vain stage of my life. My oncologist says my cancer is in a jar in the path lab and in my case unlikely to return, but of course this doesn't stop the nagging worry that it may. I think my Type 2 diagnosis was a Godsend to be honest because I am self managing it without medication and this is taking up all my thoughts, so it stops me harking back to cancer stuff.
