Worried

Have been type 1 44 years, controlled epileptic and now have coeliac disease. I had a very bad episode on Friday where I couldn’t eat enough. Just hypo all day but was suffering stress at work. Stress usually pushes my tests up. I have a Libre which has improved everything so I constantly checked it. Now it’s the weekend my tests are really high? Question is.... is this because of stress though I’ve never experienced it before, or has my coeliac disease made me brittle all of a sudden?

Hi Connie, maybe not the most useful comment, but I feel for you and you're not alone. I've been type 1 for 38 years, and for half that time had severe epilepsy (fixed by brain surgery 10 years ago). I can't imagine what it would be like to be coeliac as well. I'm still learning how to manage my diabetes, every day.

You're suddenly seeing high numbers from your libre. Have you confirmed these with fingerstick tests? The Libre algorithm tends to accentuate levels outside the normal range for safety reasons - highs are higher than blood tests, lows are lower. If in doubt, double check. It might not be as bad as you think.

You've been type 1 for a while, you know there are other reasons for levels going bad - do you have a viral infection? Are you having a stressful time? If none of this helps, best speak to a diabetes nurse for advice.

Bill xx
