hey
so i am newlyish diagnosed - feb 2011, and at the moment i am just on humulin s before meals and big snacks, I am not taking any background insulin yet. The nurse told me that at some point i will but i would know this if my levels start to raise overnight and if this happens to get in contact with her. This isn't happening however i am noticing that i am needing to inject more insulin - where as before i was on a less than 1 to 1 ratio now i am prob on and 1.2 to 1 ratio and also i have found myself feel a bit sick quite often and tested and found my bs to be around 10-13. And before i could prob get away with having a snack with 10-20g of carb in without accounting for it with extra insulin. All this has led to my average before meals being more like 8-10 than 5-7, so shud i get in touch with the nurse? I am going away camping for 6 days on saturday so should i speak to her before then or just leave it to after. Any advice? thanks

Hi Rugby girl...yes, I think you should get in touch, and see what they advise. I guess you are in the "honeymoon period" and as your pancrease produces less insulin, you are going to need to inject more..no surprise there.

But, and this is why I think you need to get professional advice, I am not sure what point you need to add the background insulin. It is fine to kepp increasing the humalin, but you need to be careful that you don't make yourself hypo. I think you have had good advice, and this will happen when you fasting BG rises, but it might be worth at least a phone call with the nurse to discuss. Haave your record book to hand, so you can discuss any lows as well as highs etc.

enjoy the camping...and make sure you take loads of hypo treatment food etc with you!

My guess would be that you having to use more insulin as you are now using it not only to cover your meals but also to cover for the decrease in background insulin. Your best best would be to go and see your HCP

Rugbygirl,

Much as others have said it's time to speak with your diabetes care team.

Hey rugbygirl!

I had a similar profile, and found that a small dose of basal in the morning covers me for a low-carb brekkie and lunch and only need fast-acting at night with main meal. 3 units insuman basal in morning (this is an intermediate acting basal and reaches its peak around lunchtime) 1:1 ratio of Apidra in the evening with meal. I might soon add a couple of units of basal at night to stop the 7+ fasting levels, but I haven't discussed that with my DSN yet. Go back and speak to your DSN. It's probably time to add that basal!
