After 5 weeks of Metformin 2x2/day and strict LCHF diet Im pretty much below 6 premeal every evening. However, I can't get my morning BS down. Potatoe starch (2 tbls in water) at night gets it down to around 7.5. Without the potatoe starch water at night my BS is around 8.5.

How do I get it down to normal lvls also in the morning?

Wait for the insulin resistance to resolve
Are you at your goal weight yet?
You may need to add a med later, met takes 3 mths for full effect

Hi Jack,

Im far from my goal weight. Have lost about 10 kilos during these 5 weeks but have much, much more to lose.

I was thinking of adding 1 met. at lunchtime, do you think that would do any good? Or should I wait for the full 3 months to pass before I make any new changes?

See your dr. You can take 2500 of standard met or 2000 slow release
The under 6 before tea shows that you aren't over the top. What are your post meals like? With lchf they should be ok too
So I wouldn't worry too much over DP at this stage. It will/should come down over time

I have mainly just measured morning BS and premeal at night this last week. Vacation times.. been out during the days and not brought my meter. THe few times I have measured post meal its been around 7.5 (6.5 if I have had a glass of wine). No wine related difference in the morning. Sounds like I drink a lot.. lol.. but Im not, Ive only had a single glass of wine a couple of nights when Ive been away on vacation.
Will do a more thorough list tomorrow to see where my values are.

How do I know if its a standard or slow release? What difference would that make on my morning BS? Lots of questions :)

Oh, and my dr.. she just wants to give me insulin to help up my own production. I dont want to go there. Hopefully it will all be better if I stay to my diet (a diet my dr dont aprove of) and when I have lost more weight. Im hoping to show her that my way is the right way when my blood tests shows a fantastic 1 HBa1c in a couple of months ;)

I would do before and 2hr after each meal and before bed
It sounds like insulin resistance so insulin isn't the first choice unless a blood test shows your pancreas isn't putting out normal amounts

I hate iPhone apps

I actually think I will test 30, 60 and 120 min after every meal. Just to se how my bs variates. At least for a day or two.

According to my dr they often prescribe insulin as a support when the BS values are as bad as mine are. However, she decided to hold on for a while. I would have protested if she hadn't. She also told me that I needed to lose weight and that it would be impossible for me to lose it on my own. She wanted to list me for a GBP right away. I refused, and it will be a small victory to show her both my BS-values and my wieght loss in august. Hoping to have lost at least 5 kilos more then..

Test the other times as well, as long as the before after and bed is done. I think these will be ok
People here have said I'm too ready to promote moving up the drug ladder
I really don't see a need to treat the DP with insulin and the potato starch 7.5 is ok for now, as long as the other tests are ok

Yes, forgot to write that I would test premeal also. I slept in today, and got my lowest morning BS so far, very happy!!! 5.2 What a difference!! Will be very interesting to se what tomorrow's morning test says.

My morning BS was never below 8.5 before I started with potatoe starch. It doesnt taste bery good but since it makes a difference I will continue with it for a while longer. Will try without when Ive lost another 10 kilo is my plan.

I have had the best day since my diagnosis!! Test values like today feels great. I dont know what changed, but Im generally an entire step lower at each test. I tested premeal, and 30, 60 and 180 min post meal just to see what happened with my BS.

Morning premeal: 5.2...30 min pm: 7.9....60 min pm: 6.9....180 min pm: 6.0
Lunch premeal...: 5.2...30 min pm 5.9.....75 min pm: 6.0....200 min pm: 5.1
Supper premeal..:5.1...30 min pm...........60 min pm: 6.8....180 min pm: 5.4

Before today Ive never been below 7.2 at my morning test. I really hope its starting to change now!!!

No, nothing wrong at all!! Im amazed! I just cant figure out what made the difference. Will be interesting to see how tomorrows values are. Low on test strips to the meter though, so cant test as much as today. Im sticking to potatoe starch :)

Thanks for your replies, Jack!

Todays morning test: 6.7. A lot higher than yesterday, but at least under 7 and Im happy about that!

As long as your other numbers are good, the before breakfast number will be ok in time and you had a taste of it yesterday.
You have read about liver dump, dawn phenomenon, insulin resistance ?
As the weight comes off, it's going to help a lot too

Dawn pheonomenon yes, liver dump and insulin resistance, not so much. I guess I have some more reading to do.
