When people who know nothing about the LCHF diet tell me I'm killing myself being on it. I was killing myself not being on it!
I work in a care home for the elderly and from next week we are going to be testing the diabetic resident's who have diabetes if we have any concerns over their condition (hyper or hypo). We were all given meters to test ourselves with and got on fine.
THEN the diabetic nurse started on the eating part....
Diabetics MUST have bread, pasta, potatoes, porridge, lots of starch, plenty of starch. Lots of fruit too, 5 a day, but she didn't say which fruit was better or worse.
ALL FAT IS BAD!
This morning because I was running late for work I had a slice of toasted seeded bread and butter for breakfast and my levels were high at break time.
I just kept my mouth shut, I just wonder why the trained diabetic nurses at the NHS don't understand diabetes.
The best bit was "there are plenty of testing kits, you can have as many as you want"........

After attending the diabetes clinic on and off for the last seven years I have come to the conclusion that they only understand pills and have no clue whatsoever about food. Happily I have seen the light begin to dawn in the eyes of my DN but yours seems to need help.

It's a shame that we don't have an emoticon for "shocked" Beryl but actually we shouldn't be shocked that is the NHS line. This is going to be hard for you I think

Those poor diabetic residents.
I'm afraid I would not have been able to keep my mouth shut.

Did she differentiate between those on insulin and those not?

My own DN is wonderful, she agrees with my diet. The 'community' DN's are another matter! One came into work after I'd lost nearly 2 st in weight and told me to take care!

That must be a first. Someone has been cautioned by a HCP for losing weight. How does she feel about smoking?

Or is it that we (the punters) are always wrong no matter what we do?

She's quite a bit overweight, so I just said I have not felt as healthy for years :) That the weight loss has given me more confidence and walked off!

The diet in the home isn't going to change, pasta and tatties are cheap. I'm just keeping my nose down until I retire, I've learnt that standing up and trying to change things doesn't work. I'm the only diabetic staff member who follows the LCHF diet, the other one won't and is very overweight, so I would be hitting my head against a brick wall.
