I have private health through work .. and although it covers all sorts not sure I need to go to them with diabetes ... has anyone done this what are your experiences versus NHS?

any advice appreciated.

I'm borderline type 2 and got diagnosed October last year

Hi Kevin,

My other half has had a bad experience with bupa allthough he isn't diabetic... He suffers badly withacid reflux and has been backwards and forwards to the GP and nothing has een done about it.. He gets private healthcare from his line of work and his workplace sent him to bupa "to get the problem sorted " as he was having time off due to the acid reflux.. His appointment was during summer last year and he went to London and saw them and the said go back to your GP so he did and he is still stuck in the same position going round in circles trying to get the problem sorted. They won't refer him to hospital to have and operation because they think he will grow out of it because he is young.. He's 23 but has suffered since he was a child..

So our view of bupa is rubbish as everyday I see him suffer and no-one will help him.. We've changed his diet and lifestyle and nothing helps.. He asked for help from the "healthcare professionals" and gets jack squat..

Just be careful with bupa as I know of others this has happened to including friends and family..

All the best..

Kerry xx

thanks Kerry.. I have used them before when I had an issue with my eye, it wasn't bupa but they used the same hospitals PPP I think, but they were fantastic where GP just kept giving me ointment they actually did something about it and it worked.

was wondering more about the benefits, at present I am diet controlled and the GP and nurse haven't really given me much info apart from lose weight. I did a discovering diabetes which had a few useful tips in it but to be honest learnt more from on here and reading a few books... just wondering if anyone has used them for diabetes.

:)

Funnily enough, I rang BUPA today.
Once you re diagnosed with T2 they aren't interested unless one ends up with further issues.
This, to me, seems a bit shortsighted..

I had bupa through work and they didn't cover any pre existing conditions, or anything that was linked to a pre existing condition, which pretty much ruled out anything I'd need them for. I changed to westfield, which didn't cover as much in value but did cover pre existing, so I can use it for consultants appointments for retinopathy etc. BUPA seemed pretty useless to me unless you are perfectly healthy to start off with, which none of us are.
