Hi my fellow low carbers.

I have been cutting my carbs back like a crazy fool, and some days have been below 20gs, in fact, taking off the fibre, I have been as low as 5gs  Since I have been testing I have had no reading above 5.5 two hours after eating, and the vast majority of them have been 4. something.

Today I had lovely fried bacon and eggs. I decided to have one slice of Burgen bread as a treat. two hours later I had a 6! Now I know that is low for some, but not for me these days. I am mindful of not going over 5.6. Does this mean I should avoid bread completely? The only thing that is different in my habits as well as the bread is gardening. I have put in a good hour plus after eating, but surely that would lower my BS?

To think I was eating 4 slices plus of my home made bread less than a month ago. It makes me wonder what I was measuring then.

Hi Jeannemum

I take it the 5.6 comes from the Beta Cell post the other day? Would point out that a good proportion of non diabetics will exceed that a lot of the time and remain non diabetic all their lives without ever realising they are doing it and will finally shift their mortal coil in some other totally unrelated way. In my mind, yes try to keep as good as possible but going over 5.6 is probably part of the average persons ageing process anyway. Certainly HbA1c rises with age regardless of lifestyle. I believe a more realistic target is 6.5 which is what 19 out of 20 non diabetics achieve and do remember 7.8 is actually where things start happening to eyes and feet which is much more an immediate thing to watch out for. You want some fun with what you eat even if it's only one meal a week. Remember you're going to have to do this for a very long time. Sorry for the lecture and I know others may disagree with me...

On the Burgen Bread. At your position after diagnosis like you couldn't even tolerate half a slice. Tried again this week, one round toasted with sugar free peanut butter as a change to my late night snack and doesn't touch my BG's any more so maybe like me you need to give your system a bit of time to detox.

That makes sense. I will leave it for another month and have another blast. It could also be parlty due to my son sending me mental today arrrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Phew. Down to 4.6 before tea. The first barbecue of the year Yum!

Well done on the 4.6  <---- doesn't mean I'm sick, it means envy

I can manage 1 slice of Burgen bread 'sometimes'. I have not had any for a few days as my BG just won't support any more carbs. I have had 18g today, and my BG is still not good.
