My surgery have told me that I use too much insulin and so the amount I get will be restricted. Does anyone know whether I can buy extra either from a pharmacy or online? I use pens and a box of 5 pens usually lasts around 10 days. Any advice would be appreciated.

You would need a prescription to buy insulin in the uk. I suppose one possibility would be to see a private GP for a prescription, don't know how much that would cost, or whether they would dual prescribe.

What insulin are you using? In what kind of doses through the day? Are you on any other medication? What's your daily diet like? And what's your BMI?

Are you having hypos? Did the "too much insulin" determination come just from a prescribing clerk, or actually from your GP?

Hi not quite sure what's going on here I've heard of surgerys restrictions on test strips etc but not on insulin which is a life saving medication go see your doctor and get them to explain why they are restricting it and make sure you get a satisfactory explanation if not take it further.

Are you in the UK? What you're saying sounds very unlike anything I've seen or heard of on the NHS... What insulin (or insulins) are you taking?

I believe insulin is wholly a prescription drug in the UK so you probably wont be able to buy it anywhere. If they are saying you are using too much then I would have thought they'd just tell you your prescription has been changed? Either way it's your surgery you should be speaking to about this and how to manage your diabetes, you really should't be trying to purchase this stuff and self medicate that's a bad idea I think.

That sounds incredibly dangerous, to restrict insulin. I've had to fight for test strips once but I simply told the doctor that tried it on me to take a walk and enrolled at another clinic. This is something you go to the press with. Get in contact with our lovely forum hosts.
