Byetta & Hypos

Hi - I was with my MIL today and she had the most massive hypo, taking her down to 1.5! She lives alone, is fiercely independent and is always too worried to talk to the Drs. She is 76 and has been T2DM since her late 50s. She has only recently (*since Easter) been changed over to Byetta and has lost over 3 stone in weight. However, in the last week her hypos have been so bad that her vision has been almost lost. We gave glucose as that was all in the house and after 1 hour blood sugar was still only 2. However, after more food she spiked at 12 and now it won't shift past 11.8. Yes, I know that a Dr should have been called but she categorically refused.

What's to do? She won't let us call her Dr but we are so worried if we had not been there today the outcome may not have been so favourable. We live over 150 miles away so can only be there so much and we are so worried.

Is this common? I've read online that once you loose quite a bit of weight dosages of Byetta may have to be reviewed - is this true?

Many thanks in advance,
Melissa (insulin resistant and trying to stay well but so worried about MIL).

OK, quick update, took evening injection as per normal and now 5.6 so eating again. Problem is the Byetta has killed her appetite and she keeps getting mouth ulcers and now has oral thrush and a UTI so no appetite.

Any advice gratefully received and yes, my H will be taking her to the Dr asap but should we consider tonight or tomorrow?

Many thanks

Hi,first of she must speak to her gp.there are too many complications to not act.
i have been on exenetide for about 4 months and kept having hypos.is she on gliclazide as this causes the hypos when used with exenetide.i have gone from 4 glic to none in the time ifve been on exenetide.the hypos have stopped, losing weight at a good safe pace.the side effects i have had are nausea, wind, feeling bloated and full.have found that eating less stops the stomach pains.overeating gave me very painful stomach, also healthy food causes less pain than fried food, have stopped eating fried eggs as caused very sore stomach.its a case of trial and error to see which foods cause pain and which dont.also reduce those portions, and stop eating at first sign of pain.good luck and keep the faith.

Hi, with you're concerns with your MIL and living 150miles away from her, could she be encouraged to consider wearing and using when needed a 'lifeline necklace' this she can wear around her neck everyday and use it in an emergency.
It will be linked up to the HCP ambulance, police so if ever she had another major hypo it would ensure help turning up when most needed to treat her.
Think there is a small cost to access this via service, local GP's surgery can steer you in the right direction to get info to get this set up in her area.
It would/can then give you some peace of mind too given the travel distance.
Hope this helps?
