Byetta, Why won't my Dr prescribe it??!!

I have had Type 2 diabetes for 5 years, using metformin. However, over this last year I have found that my blood sugar levels are becoming erratic. I was informed about Byetta, and have heard good reports about it, but when I mentioned it to my GP, I was told it is not "registered" and therefore she cannot prescribe it.

Can someone give me the "official" standing of this medication :?:

Thanks Chris

Might be because of this

You might need a consultant to prescribe it.
One way possible way of finding out if it is on a 'red list' is google *NHS PCT Formulary (not all will be online)
so for example I googled ' Dorset PCT formulary' and found the formulary for the area
under Endocrinology I find
For specialist initiation only: exenatide, liraglutide
and a link saying how it can/when it can be prescribed.

I think you'll find that your PCT due to costs has restricted it's prescription to consultants only...

If your control is causing concern, I would insist that you are referred to the consultant, this way they can work out what is the best treatment for you and perhaps decide that Bayetta is...
