i too have tiny air bubbles which turn into a larger one and i do the flicking thing with the needle pointing down so any bubbles float to the top and this works fine for me.
the tiny bubbles appear in new pens and possibly due to being cold.

If you point the needle upwards and flick it with your finger the air bubble will rise, depending on how much air is inside the pen only air should be expelled when you push the button, i normally repeat until i get a stream of byetta.
