C-peptide

The hospital wrote to my GP to say my C-peptide was 429 a year ago and is now 309. It was described as being on the "lower side". I'm being brought back for insulin antibody tests and a mixed meal test soon. Can anyone explain the c-peptide thing, please? What is considered normal, and what does low mean?
