Hi I’m new to this and need some advise please,I am type 2 and have quite good control as last hba1c was 42,I check now and again and usually my sugar never goes above 180 after eating, lately I’ve been waking up to 160 ish readings,I’ve tried to eat a slice of wholewheat toast so I can take my metformin hoping it will start to bring it down,I’ve tried to watch everything I’m eating no chocolate no high carb stuff but it’s been going up to around 250,3 hours ago I had a small bowl of fruit and fibre and before my blood was 120 and it’s gone up to 295 2 and a half hours later I take certain medications and my statin has just been highered to 60mg,I’m very confused and a bit concerned as to how long I can manage like this without it doing harm,I’m asking on here incase someone has had anything similar happened, any advice would be appreciated thankyou, kind regards Marie x

Welcome @Maddie1072
Metformin won't bring your blood sugar down, it doesn't work in that way. It works by restricting the amount of stored glucose your liver releases into your blood. It can do nothing about the glucose that's already in there

no chocolate no high carb stuff
Wholemeal bread and fruit and fibre cereal is high carb stuff and will cause higher blood sugar levels.
All carbohydrates when digested will raise your sugar levels, the only difference between white bread and wholemeal is that the wholemeal takes a little longer to digest, but the carbs will still raise your levels, just a little slower.
The trick is to avoid the high sugar levels by cutting out as many carbs as you can,

Thanks for the reply,I have been doing really well for a while controlling it,I haven’t been in good health the last few weeks as I’ve been having tests on my heart due to being anemic which has given me really bad palpitations the only thing I can think of is that I don’t really have an appetite so I’m not eating as well, could my body be storing sugar as it thinks I’m starving or something, should I probably try eating small amounts more often would this help ?

Because our insulin isn't very efficient at dealing with the glucose we get from carbs, our bodies are forced to get rid of the extra sugar anyway it can. Some of it is stored in the liver, when the liver can't store any more it changes the sugar to fat and stores that way.
Your poor health is more than likely the reason for your higher levels at the moment. Any illness, infection or stress will prompt your liver to release some stored glucose.

It all depends on what you eat, regular small amounts of carbs is just going to keep topping up your blood sugar. If your blood sugar is high, the energy that sugar would have given you is just coursing through your veins, it's not feeding you.
If you eat mainly protein and healthy fats, keep the carbs to a minimum. No bread, pasta, rice, cereals, stick to above ground non starchy veg. You will be giving your body what it needs, good healthy nutrition.

Thankyou so much for this advice I will take it on board and hopefully in a few days it might lower my bloods,I have lost 2 stone too with the fasting diet but probably my bad health issues aren’t helping at the moment, thanks again

Also be aware that anaemia might give a falsely high hba1c (But won’t effect blood glucose measurements so very important to keep track with these as a result). There is an alternative test, fructosamine, if you need an alternative.
I’m going to echo the advice above that toast and fruit and fibre are high carb items. I’m thinking that as well as being ill likely raising your numbers there’s still a lot of room for improvement in food choices. There are some useful links below in red in my signature (visable on the web version, not sure about the app - you may need to select various options to see or toggle signatures but they ar every useful to be able to see). If you can’t see them start here https://dietdoctor.com/diabetes

Metformin is advised to be taken with food to avoid gastrointestinal side effects (diarrhoea mostly) but it does work fine without food as a drug, and you could always take it later in the day if you choose not to have breakfast.

Thankyou for your advise I will most definitely look into this and hopefully get some insight into better food choices
