can anyone answer this question thanks

hello again can my mother in law enjoy a couple bottles of wine or more twice a week not on any medication at the moment seeing the gp in a few days this may sound alot but its over a period of seven to eight hours

can any one tell me if drinking 2-3 bottles of wine a week will do any harm i know this sounds alot but its drunk over a period of 7 -8 hours or does that not matter my mother in law goes to the gp in a few days as she is not on any medication as yet but they have told her ,her blood sugar level is high she is in her late 60's

That's a fairly high alcohol intake and it possibly could be doing her harm, but not to her blood sugars. Alcohol has the effect of lowering blood sugar, not raising it. The greater liklihood is of liver damage.

I found this-

People with diabetes should follow these alcohol consumption guidelines:

Do not drink more than two drinks of alcohol in a one-day period. (Example: one alcoholic drink = 5-ounce glass of wine, 1 1/2-ounce "shot" of liquor or 12-ounce beer).

The drier the wine the better I would say. Red wine seems more prone to lower my blood sugars than white.

The problem with lots of boozing is that the alcohol gets precedence in your liver over other things so other functions can be impared whilst its there and if you have too much over too long then you are more likely to have liver problems.

However, I've got completely bored and annoyed with the government and the press fixation on how many units of alcohol we can or can not take. These units are plucked out of the air and not actually related to specific circumstances; some people shouldn't drink at all, some people can happily get by on far more than suggested. It's down to how one reacts to alcohol - if your mother in law is happy and apparently well on what she's drinking then that's really down to her.

Keep an eye on liver function when she get's her blood tests done (and keep in mind that Statins can cause an additional strain to the liver so that's something else to think about).

Now, whose round is it?

Dillinger

They have a new drug out called Restorival (sp?) that provides all of the benefits of red wine. You have to drink alot of red wine to get real benefits, which is never a good idea for diabetics due to the alcohol content, which may cause low, as well as high blood sugars. Should consult your doctor before taking any medications or supplements if you are diabetic. Also you might want to see if any research has been done on this drug and possible side effects. There are web sites that offer free samples.

I think what you are referring to is resveratrol which is not a drug but is a substance that occurs naturally in the grapes from which red wine is made. There are various supplements on the market that are extracts of resveratrol and claim to be cures for aging, wrinkles, diabetes and probably a million and one other things. Like most similar snake-oil "supplements" the only people who benefit from them are the manufacturers - they get rich!

Here's a link to some more info on resveratrol
