can anyone help daughters blood sugars high

Hi Sophsmam,
If i where you i would stick to 25u of Lantus as that is keeping her within good numbers throughout the day. I know after a few nights on 25u you say she will ineviatably go low in the morning. Rather than reduce her Lantus i would give her a longer acting carb before bed. Reducing and increasing her Lantus every few days will really act as a see-saw and give her unstable readings.

we can only do that if her bloods are quite low otherwise she's up all night going to the toilet and getting drinks.then she's tired the next day so at the minute a no win situation.but i do know what you are saying.

If your daughter is waking up with a high bg in the morning, then increase the Lantus at bedtime 1/2 unit or 1 unit at a time. Also in my opinion (and I've had D for over 40 years) so that Lantus doesn't start behaving oddly in the middle of the night, do use a bit of carb like small piece of bread with a bit of peanut butter on it. Once you get your daughter with an OK bg of 5 at BR, then use the Novorapid to handle all the bolus and the rise up in bg levels. Its not at all uncommon for Lantus's action to only last for about 12-15hrs top max, so that is why people need to increase their bolus doses so that they compensate for Lantus's (lack of ??) action. When I used Lantus, I found that I needed to go up and up with my bolus as my day went on even though my carb intake went down. I eventually changed over to Levemir and used that BR and before bed as that what was convenient for me, so I didn't get a straight 12hr split but could still judge my bolus's not too badly. I still left the evening Levemir at bedtime so that I knew what I was doing and which insulin was causing whatever to happen.

if thats the case, all i can suggest is a slow release carb before bed, it shouldn't peak her bs and give her the unwanted effect of thirst and constant urinatian. I can understand the frustration, the ups and downs, swings and roundabouts, its all trail and error.

what would you suggest i could gave her. this was never a problem in the beginning she was on a set of amount of lantus and bloods were fine.but these past few weeks out of control and we cant get the lantus right for whatever reason.

Its all trial and error really. I admit 25units of Lantus is a lot in one go but this should be dependant on how high bg is when going to bed and on what bg is at BR time. Once the Lantus dose is adjusted correctly, then all the other bg levels during the day can be altered using the Novorapid.

Its really hard to advise on this Sophsmam so you've just got to use common sense and trial and error. If you increase the Lantus above 25 units, then do use a biscuit or something so that the lantus does its job but combined with some food it doesn't cause yr daughter to go low 2am onwards.
 
when she woke up one morning at 3.4 she'd had 23 units she had 4 hypos during the day,so then we decreased it,next morning back in the 12s .so increased it again and now the past 2 weeks shes had about 3 low bloods on a morning then go back up and get higher.so now on 25 units she'll now be in between 24 and 25 units.she can drop quite suddenly she was 17 one morning next morning 4.1.it's the lantus we just can't get right,but we were told puberty causes sugars to rise in the morning and would need more insulin which is the most likely cause with her bloods.so maybe we'll just have to ride it out.
 
Sorry but who advised you on using a high dose of Lantus at bedtime? Have you tried combining it with some food or are you using it on its own?
 
the diabetic nurse and doctor.she will have her supper then about 30 mins later she'll have her lantus
 
Just had a thought although you and yr daughter might not like it.

Try decreasing the lantus by about 4 units then but throw in a bit of Novorapid. That way the bolus ( 1 or 2 units will handle the rise up but won't do too much lowering plus the slightly decreased lantus should behave itself until morning with any luck

it's just struck me that if your daughter was diagnosed last Oct, could be that her honeymoon period has ended, thats why everything is so erratic, plus has she started menstrating yet? as that will cause some highs in her cycle. Andrew takes 20u of Levemir before bed and anything between 5-10u of humalog after meals, we carb count,and also use gluten free, as he has coeliac disease. So i don't think her requirements are high, after all children are different.

suzi that is one of the things they mentioned when we contacted them so possibly that too.also i don't think it will be long before she does she started showing signs of puberty at the age of 7.
she's very tall for her age nearly 5ft ,i did notice today she did seem very hungry but her bloods were below ten.i know they get hungry more if bloods are high so i did think that was unusal for her.
 
Sounds very much like it to me, though having 2 boys i'm no expert on bringing up girls. Andrews having a growth spurt at the moment, and todays bs where great all day until bedtime, b4 b'fast 4.2,b4 lunch 8.9, b4 dinner 5.0, b4 bed 19.8, only because the greedy little ******, between 8pm and 9pm had 2 yoghurts, an apple, packet of crisps and low sugar ice-pop (before he ate it all his bs was 8.9). So he won't be having supper tonight and it's nothing to do with bloods, he's no room for anything else!! Anyhow he's had his 20u of Levemir and i know when he wakes in morning or as its summer holidays, about 10.30/11am his bs will be around 5.
Hope Sophies bs is better in the morning and you both sleep well tonight, i remember how frustrating it was checking on Andrew during the night, he went through a phase of bed wetting before and after diagnosis, we had to retrain his bladder with an alarm attached to his pj's, as he always has been a heavy sleeper. Luckily for us if he hypos in his sleep, he always wakes himself up and says he's had a nightmare.

again she's woken up with bloods in the eights had 2 extra units, so hopefully in 2 hours they'll be below ten.I only checked her before i went to bed and they were 12.4, usually by that time they are between 15 and 19.
she's got a brother and a sister whats the chances of them developing diabetes.

bs of 8 in the morning isn't that high, Andrews consultant considers anything between 5-7 to be acceptable in children. Andrews going skate boarding this afternoon, i'll deliberatly give him extra carbs at lunch and a few units less of insulin, its turned out warm today and i know he'll burn them all off, and we don't want to risk a hypo today as he's going out with his brother, whilst i stay at home and catch up on ironing.
As for the chances of your two other children developing Diabetes, i can't answer that, but ask your consultant, i think there is a a simpe test that can be carried out, which gives you a percentage.

They are good for sophie apart from yesterday and today her morning bloods were between 12 and 17.and then her bloods would remain high during the day.so whatever was going on with her i hope it's sorted itsself out and we can get back to normal.fingers crossed her lantus can stay stable and we don't need to alter it.
We did her bs two hours after breakfast 5.2, yesterday she was 14.5 2 hours later so that extra 2 units she had today helped.
 
Glad things are getting back onto an even keel. Jot down the dates incase you find she goes high again within the next 21 days, her body maybe getting ready to menstrate, and it'l be good to know then why the highs.

Oh don't say that suzi thats the day im dreading she's not 11 till february too young for periods.it's been going on for some weeks high bloods.this is the first time she's had 2 days of good bs.so now im thinking like you did about the honeymoon period was that the cause after all.

Girls seem to be taking there periods younger and younger these days. I'd say by all accounts her honeymoon period has come to an end, hence the high bs. I know when this happened to Andrew i thought, thats it he's 100% diabetic now, that sounds stupid, but whilst his pancreas was squeezing out some insulin at least his body was functioning. Now we just have to do the best for them. I think being a parent of a diabetic child is harder than being a diabetic, cause you never stop worrying about them, and you as Mum take on the pressure and stress. Anyhow glad things are improving, we've had a so so day here. Take care,

thanks suzi not a good morning bs 17 had 13 units only came down to 11.4 ,2 hours later.she' didn't do her lantus correctly last night.in her own words when i did it felt like i'd hit something hard,and when she removed the needle it was bleeding and some lantus with it.so hopefully tommorow they'll be better.
