Hi,
I was newly diagnosed 5 weeks ago. BS was 14 on diagnosis. Had oral meds since first diagnosed. Tiredness better, but suffering with diarrhoea which I've been told will hopefully end soon.
I've been off work with sick note since diagnosis. This is my problem ........ I love my job, been with the company 3 years, only had sick leave couple of times for a day in that time, with a bug or cold.
The 'big boss' has requested a meeting with me on Thursday and I am terrified they are going to ask me back to work, the mere thought of coping with my job makes me tremble at the moment.
Will my doctor likely allow me to stay off until I feel better ? Is 5 weeks too long for me to still be feeling ill? I'm signed off til 14 th Nov and know with certainty I won't be ready yet, but should I be by now ?

IF YOU ARE ON METFORMIN THIS CAN GIVE YOU TOILET PROBLEMS BUT THEY SHOULD SETTLE DOWN. OTHER OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE SO GO BACK TO GP AND EXPLAIN YOUR PROBLEM. I AM ON METFORMIN AND DID HAVE A FEW PROBLEMS AT FIRST BUT I ALWAYS TAKE MINE HALF WAY THROUGH OR AFTER A MEAL. I HAVE FOUND THAT CUTTING OR SERIOUSLY REDUCING CARBS IE ALL BREAD, PASTA, RICE AND POTATO IN PARTICULAR HAS GIVEN ME A NEW LEASE OF LIFE SO WHY NOT TRY IT. I EAT MORE PROTEIN AND DONT EVEN MISS THE CARBS NOW AND I AM NEVER HUNGRY JUST MAKE SURE YOU DRINK PLENTY OF WATER AS WELL

If you are still feeling ill more than five weeks after starting on Metformin, you should seriously consider asking to be put on other medication instead. Some people cannot tolerate Metformin at all as the diarrhea problem doesn't get any better for them. There's no point in taking medicine that makes you more ill than you already are, or that causes you to lose your job!

In my own case I tried slow-release Metformin for several months & it caused Hepatitis in addition to constant diarrhea that no other medication was able to stop. The Metformin had no discernable effect on my blood sugar either; nor did other tablets I was prescribed. I'm now fairly stable on Liraglutide & Novomix 30 Insulin injections.

If you ever get put on Liraglutide (Victoza) injections, make sure you ask for anti-sickness tablets for the first two weeks, as it often causes nausea at first, but then is OK.

Hang in there Mrs O ...

I was diagnosed on 8 August 2012, so that's 13 weeks ago.

I had numerous health problems and I felt about 112 back then and was ready to give up the ghost to be honest.

I've been on Metformin SR 2000mg since then, and fortunately I didn't experience the sickness and toilet problems that some others have had so I'm lucky in that respect. I've virtually cut out ALL simple carbs like bread, pasta, rice, cakes, cereal, biscuits etc.

Do I miss them? NO and that's the honest truth. I'm never hungry, my brain is alert again, my body is alive again and I no longer feel 112, I feel marvellous. Would I go back to eating carbs like I did before? Not on your nelly!

I'm not sure why some people suffer problems with Metformin and I've wondered if it's because they continue to eat carbs and if perhaps the carbs cause the conflict with Metformin, as it is a kind of appetite suppresant too. If anyone would like to share whether they're a Metformin user AND a carb eater AND who has such problems we might get to the bottom of it.

What kind of diet are you eating yourself?

If you haven't seen it already, give the Diet Doctor a go - http://www.dietdoctor.com/lchf
