Hi Roman..I'm not exactly sure but some of the symptoms you are describing are listed as side effects of the seroxat..or it could be your body reacting to such a low dose..hopefully the blood test will show if there is anything wrong..as for the feelings of unreality..this could be due to your depressive state (I get this myself)

HI. I would expect the Seroxat to be the cause. My wife was on it a few years back and I recognise the symptoms! It may be worth discussing alternative anti-depressant approaches with your GP?

I've suffered all my life from bouts of mild to moderate to severe depression. These depressions have had a really awful effect on my life and that of my family too. I've been on and off several antidepressants, I've had bad reactions to some of them and had to come off them and just battle on without them ... and it is a battle. Some days I just feel like I could sleep for a thousand years and still not wake up refreshed. Other days my brain just won't work, doesn't matter how many times I ask a question, receive the answer, I can't take it in or remember it. It's miserable and it's embarrassing and affects every aspect of my life, ability to work, hold down a job etc

Last year was a total bummer, I was in a really dark, black gloomy place. I crawled out of that and went back to work, not feeling well, but just slightly better. Work was fine, I'm actually working in a psychiatric hospital at the moment and it's been an enlightening experience for me, and I enjoy my work in that field because I feel I know a lot about what the patients are going through, from an experiential level. But the last few weeks I noticed my mood was getting really low again, my enthusiasm was waning, my motivation was lacking, my energy was ****, totally **** ... I was going to work, coming home and falling asleep and that was 'life'.

I didn't want to see my GP for antidepressants because the last lot I had I ended up having a bad reaction to which resulted in anaphylaxis, so I decided to try St John's Wort instead. I've heard a lot about it over the years and I know it's not without its side effects too and you have to be careful if you're on any other medication. But I needed to lift this mood before it became severe and I ended up staring at the walls all day being unable to even think.

I started taking 250mg a day, which I got from Boots Chemist, just over a week ago. Within three days I felt brighter, chattier, more sociable. After a week on it, I'm getting up and feeling like I want to be awake and am getting on with the housework and it doesn't feel like the big effort it felt like two weeks ago.

I'm not a 'miracle drug' pusher, I'm a very sceptical person, but I'm impressed with this and will continue with it and see how I fare.

Hi Roman, I'm sorry to read your post. It's like a curse isn't it, it won't leave you alone and you just can't switch it off. Your drug is an SSRI type and all of them have side effects that vary, but all SSRI type drugs will have side effects, some are similar like dry mouth and drowsiness.

I hope your bloods are ok in which case, why don't you ask to see a consultant? Many of them experiment with ' poly- pharmacy ' which is not relying on one medicine but they mix a combination together and, whilst the results vary from person to person, you can have low doses of two drugs that hit the mark for you and make you feel happier. It's true to say that any drug that doesn't have a side effect doesn't have a therapeutic effect either, but the higher the dose the more side effects jump on you, which is why poly-pharmacy is used nowadays, don't rely on your GP though see a consultant.

Some patients are known to have treatment resistant depression in which case, I really would talk to a consultant as you're going to need to try different drugs. I mentioned SSRI type drugs, there are SSNI and TCA types and I know they're to be similar side effects across them. There is a lesser used type of antidepressant called MAOI's - Moclobemide is one such drug and MAOI's show less of the common side effects than the other categories. Telling you all this as there is lots of hope for you! - don't suffer anymore and take a gentle but firm approach with your GP and ask to see a consultant.

Are you depressed or sad? There are no drugs that come in a bottle to cure sadness, quite often a consultant will categorise your depression such as 'situational' - that's harder to treat with drugs as until your situation changes your moods will be dark. Hope this is making sense. PLEASE don't suffer anymore, go and get an appointment with a consultant psychiatrist and start the road to recovery and be happy again.

Indeed, by all means, message me in private if you want to pour it out or ask questions, there are links with depressive states and diabetes, nothing new there. In fact severe depression can cause trauma to the body that can set off diabetes. It's well known in North America especially research done in Canada.

Argh !!! Never mix St johns wort with prescription drugs, same goes for 5-HTP which DOES work, mixing these can cause serotonin toxicity which in severe cases can be deadly.

I wasn't suggesting for anyone to mix St John's Wort with ANY drugs at all. I was simply giving my experience of past depressions, antidepressants and being on and off them, and trying out St John's Wort. I'm assuming we're all adults and can read instructions and pharmaceutical labels etc.

Roman ... am I right in assuming from your name that you're either Polish or of Polish descent?

You're asking for some understanding here ... and this may sound a bit odd ... but I'm of Polish descent and I think a certain amount of 'melancholia' is a part of my inherited Polish psyche. I have a very deep spiritual understanding of life and its connectivity that's sometimes hard to explain. I'm very empathic, sometimes to a painful degree and my life has been full of 'vague feelings of unreality' at times, which have later become very clear bursts of insight into aspects of life that people sometimes never experience. The vagueness is horrible when we're going through it, but try to remember that all will come clear eventually. I think your mind may be processing something which may be personal to you or may be a collective event, which is trying to come to the surface in a way which you will understand and will heal. I hope that makes some sense. If not, please ignore me.
