My son (13) had his first day back at school after diagnosis at start of March today(two wks Easters hols). I went to sch with DSN and saw the matron and care plan was agreed. He went to her office to do his insulin and asked if he could do it after eating and was told he couldn't ( he has started carb counting). He made a guess and took too much... Had two hypos in afternoon which he dealt with himself. He had to do his insulin in the toilet in her office. Am I being overprotective in thinking this is out of order? She made a comment in the meeting we had for care plan about 'all the diabetics just line up for the toilet and do their insulin' and I said at that point I didn't think it was appropriate. There is ample room and a clinical couch with a curtain in the room but it seems that there were a large number of other pupils in the office all eating their lunch! I know when I was diagnosed with T1, I was told that even the cleanest toilets have spores and airborne germs. Any advice?! TIA

Make a rule with the matron: your son will take his insulin in the toilet, but he gets to use the toilet on her desk from now on.

No, you're not being unreasonable and your son shouldn't ever be forced to do something like that. There are laws/regulations in most countries protecting you against that sort of treatment as well.

Side note: yes, I have actually proposed that rule to someone before after they made a similar ignorant comment to me.

That is not on at all. Toilets are not hygenic and it is discrimination. Put a complaint in writing to the school.

Just ask the nurse if she would like to eat her lunch in the toilets say just after they have been used or at any time for that matter after all what's a few million air borne molecules of excreta.
