Can diabetics give blood

If you are on any kind of diabetic medication then i was told no way :)

I don't think so, both for your sake( it might mess up your control and the ecipients, who might get too much glucose or your medication. Check with the transfusion service.

Short answer is no if you are on any form of diabetes medication - which is a real shame since I have a fairly rare blood group and used to donate before I hit the drugs!!! :?

This is actually worth enquiring if you are a Type 2.

Type 1 diabetics can definatly NOT give blood. But i have heard in the news recently that some type 2 diabetics can... if controlled by diet and exercise alone.

I was a blood donor before diagnosis... Im wondering if i could donate platelettes sinse they only take the platelettes and not the blood...

I sent the blood service an email today...

Here's the response...

Dear Mr Stuart *******

Thank you for your recent e-mail.

DIABETES:

You may donate as long as EITHER you have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes (abnormal
blood sugar) or gestational (pregnancy) diabetes as long as you do not require
treatment at present or your diabetes is controlled by diet alone OR You are taking
the same dose of the same medication for 4 weeks or more and feeling fit and well
and in either case the following does NOT apply

You are not under investigations
You have needed no treatment with insulin within the last 4 weeks
You have not suffered from Heart Failure
You are not under investigation, on treatment or under follow up for renal (kidney)
impairment
You have never had ulcers or wounds related to a loss of sensation
You have had no amputation or blood vessel surgery
You have never had gangrene
You have no problems with feeling faint, fainting or giddiness

Please always mention medication you are taking to the staff at session.

These guidelines are the same for whole blood and platelet donation.

If there is anything we can help with or that you would like to discuss further,
please do not hesitate to contact us again. We would be pleased to help if we can.

Yours sincerely

Hope this answers your question! ... it should do! lol

I was told by the specialist diabetic nurse that I cannot give blood because my blood contains antibodies to the insulin producing cells and therefore someone else could develop type 1 if they used my blood.

Is this false then?
