Can I low carb without losing weight?

Hi I'm just about to start on low carb after 13 years type 1 and fed up with being unable to match insulin (on pump) to carbs. My question is, can I low carb and NOT lose weight (I can't afford to lose weight). My cholesterol is a little high so on statins, so have been brainwashed as we are not to eat too much fat, but I know I'll increase my fat intake to compensate for far fewer carbs...

Many thanks, Paula

So I did the Newcastle Diet and lost the weight I wanted to. Then I adopted a low carb diet and managed to maintain my weight.

So my answer to your question would be yes you can.

I get by with around 50g carbs spread over the day. I am however Type 2 so not sure if 50g would be low enough for Type 1's.

Maybe a T1 will answer your question in their way.

Good luck. :)

Yes you can. I started to low carb 18 months ago and lost some weight (7lb) I didn't want to loose, but saw my BG levels improve. I then managed to put weight back on (7 lb) keeping low carb. I managed this through eating high calorie low carb food. A buletproof coffee for example is around 500 calories, no carbs. Eggs and bacon for breakfast. Lots of real mayonnaise on salads, double cream, coconut oil and butter etc... And fatty meats and fish.
And since I have been on this diet my HDL cholesterol (the good one) has improved and is now much higher than my LDL.
Most LCHF experts seem to aim for around 80% fat, 15% protein and 5% carb. It seems this ratio improves our cholesterol levels and general well being. It has mine.

Yes you can - it's not specifically a weight loss diet though it'd used as such by many of us. You just need to eat the right amounts of food to maintain your weight; have look here for a low carb nutritional calculator to help you get this right.

I'm a type 2 and have maintained my weight at about 50 carbs a day for the last three months. Carbs are primarily from non-starchy vegetables. I've eliminated all sugar and grains. I greatly limit starchy vegetables and legumes. I eat meat, poultry, fish, eggs, cheese, and a variety of raw nuts, also butter (from grass fed cows), extra virgin olive oil, and a half avocado a day, sometimes coconut oil.

As a T1 that weight trains 3 times per week and does cardio 1-2 times per week, and eats a predominantly low carb diet (sub-50g per day), I'd say that there is no problem with eating low carb and not losing weight. It simply depends on the amount of calories you eat. As a rough example, at around 2000 calories a day, I lose weight when training. At 2000-2500 I generally maintain it and at more than 2500 I put it on.

As with all foods, while carb and non-carb cals may not be equal, eating more than you need causes you to gain weight and eating under what you use causes you to lose weight. You will need to find your own equilibrium level.

Love the name by the way, @canwegetanotherdog? , sounds just like my other half!

It depend on you and your body
I gained weight on lc, not a lot of members have managed that, post nd I am being very alert as to what I put in my mouth and fast for 18 hours a day everyday and still manage to just about keep the weight maintained. I tend to pick weight very very quickly, fortunately I manage to loose it quickly too.
